Artist Profile: Huang Ruo
Huang Ruo’s work has been praised by The Wall Street Journal as adding “a new tint to the orchestra palette.” One of four composers commissioned by the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival this 2008 season, his new work will receive its world premiere by the trio Real Quiet on August 6 at St. Francis Auditorium.
Only in his early thirties, Mr. Ruo has written over 130 works, ranging from pieces for solo instruments, small and large ensembles, works for standard orchestra, chamber orchestra, soloist and orchestra, to multi-media pieces, music for dance, music for voices and pop genre. Huang Ruo’s music has been performed nationally and abroad in such renowned halls as Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall, Philadelphia’s Academy of Music, Aspen’s Harris Concerto Hall, Amsterdam’s MUZIEKGEBOUW AAN ‘T IJ and Paradiso Hall, and Hong Kong’s City Hall, among others, and by such music organizations as The Philadelphia Orchestra, the American Composers Orchestra, Albany Symphony, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the ASKO Ensemble, Dutch Vocal Laboratory and the Nieuw Ensemble, to name a few. His work has been spotlighted on National Public Radio (NPR), Radio-Finland, Radio-Sweden, Radio-Amsterdam, Radio-Canada and Radio-China.
Lauded as an “inventive composer” by The New York Times, in addition to his work with musicians, Mr. Ruo has collaborated with the New York City Ballet and choreographers Damian Woetzel and Christopher Wheeldon, setting his work, Divergence, (Concerto No. 3) for a gala event. Also a noted author and lecturer, Mr. Ruo’s book, “A Selection of Classic Chinese Folk Songs”, was published by the Zhong Shan University Press. Among his lecture and forum credits are New York University, Columbia University, the music conservatories of Oberlin, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and the Aspen Composers’ Forum.
Born on Hainan Island, Mr. Ruo began composition and piano studies at the age of six with his father, a well-known composer in China. He received both a traditional and western education at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he was admitted into the composition program when he turned 12, studying with Deng Erbo. After winning the Henry Mancini Award at the 1995 International Film and Music Festival in Switzerland, he moved to the United States, where he received a Bachelors of Music from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Masters of Music from The Juilliard School. A permanent resident of the United States, Mr. Ruo is currently a composition faculty member at SUNY Purchase, and is working with Samuel Adler at The Juilliard School toward a Doctor of Musical Art degree in Composition.
In February 2007, NAXOS released Mr. Ruo’s Chamber Concerto Cycle on its acclaimed American Classics Series, and Albany Records will release Leaving Sao, a work for string orchestra, in the near future.
