More on Santa Film Festival and….

by

Alanis Obomsawin is a Canadian documentary filmmaker whose powerful works address the many conflicts faced by contemporary Native peoples. Since launching her film career in the 1960s, Obomsawin has focused on issues of sovereignty, land rights, education, poverty and self-identity as they impact Native communities, devoting particular attention to the Abenaki Nation, of which she is a member.

The festival features her latest film, “Gene Boy Came Home” (2007), the hard-luck homecoming of an Abenaki man who joined the Marines and served in Vietnam on a dare. Also included are “Waban-Aki: People from Where the Sun Rises” (2006), which examines the shrinking Abenaki Nation and “Richard Cardinal: Cry from a Diary of a Metís Child” (1986), a disturbing examination of a youth’s suicide.

Festival submissions are divided into five categories: Independent Spirits (American-made narrative films, outside the studio system, any budget, shorts and features); Making it Reel (documentaries, shorts and features); Eye on the World (films of any genre and length made outside the USA); Art Matters (multi-length films celebrating the creative spirit) and Southwest Showcase (films made in the Southwest).
Can’t get to the festival? Get a flavor for what’s happening by tuning to the webcast Friday, November 30, 8:30-11:30 p.m.

The Santa Fe Film Festival once again presents a live, streaming webcast, featuring scores of visiting filmmakers and other industry professionals. Access the webcast directly via a link on the SFFF website at santafefilmfestival.com.
