The Albuquerque Blues Connection is a New Mexico Blues icon that features the distinctive Harp and Vocals of
“Mexican” Jerry Muniz. Jerry is known as an energetic performer possessed with the blues mojo. He connects directly with
his audience, often going out onto the dance floor to boogie with the crowd. As he tells the band before each show, “if the
band ain’t sweating’, why should the crowd?” Dave Silva on Guitar and Vocals, has been playing with Jerry for over 12
years and is the band’s musical director. Dave and Jerry co-write much of the band’s material. Mark McKenna on drums, he
has been playing the drums for the Albuquerque Blues Connection for over 5 years and provides the solid drive behind the
boogie. His downbeat is unshakable, and when he kicks the intro for “Got My Mojo Working” the dancers come out of their
chairs to fill the dance floor. Steve Whitman on Bass and Vocals, joined the band on bass in the summer of 2002. Steve
grew up hearing his father’s jazz records, and took up bass. Luis “Smoothie” Soto, on Sax and Vocals, Smoothie began
playing with the Albuquerque Blues Connection in 2003. On January 15, 2005, Smoothie was inducted into the New
Mexico Hall of Fame Foundation at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A New Mexico
institution, Smoothie has worked with a long list of local and national acts in over 40 years of playing.
Chris Dracup and Tommy Elskes once again team up for an evening blues steeped in the New Orleans tradition.
Our Saturday Night Jazz & Blues Under the Stars at the Albuquerque Museum is the place for enjoying great Jazz & Blues
music, food and libations in Albuquerque. The Cooperage Restaurant offers a fine selection of grilled en trees, salads,
dessert, and a full service bar. A portion of the proceeds from their sales benefits the NMJW Education Programs.
The New Mexico Jazz Workshop is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the American improvisational art form
known as Jazz. The NMJW is the premier jazz presenting and education organization in New Mexico. Through concert
presentations and educational programs for children and adults, the NMJW promotes awareness and appreciation for jazz
and fosters understanding between cultures. Committed to showcasing the best and very broadest interpretation of jazz,
NMJW is also concerned with the creation of programming that is responsive to the unique regional and cultural aspects of
New Mexico. This is accomplished by fostering a local music scene and collaborating with other community and artistic
organizations. For more information visit www.nmjazz.org or call 505-255-9798
