A favorite Labor Day event is the original wine festival. The New Mexico Wine Festival at Bernalillo wraps up the summer with the premier wine festival of the southwest! Just north of Albuquerque, the historic town of Bernalillo is host to the biggest wine festival in the state. Most of all the New Mexico wineries will be there, giving their customers a rare opportunity to taste and purchase New Mexico wines at their best. Lots of great music, arts and crafts, and those summer foods we all love make a perfect backdrop for wine, wine, wine! Our favorite band, Le Chat Lunatique performs Monday, 3:15pm. LAS CRUCES - Manuel Peña’s unique “coming of age” photo collage series helped him get into the master’s degree photography program at the prestigious Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology. But earlier this month, the same works were removed from the New Mexico State University Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Exhibition at the Las Cruces Museum of Art. Peña said he went to the opening of his “The Swimming Hole” exhibit May 9 to find “six empty nails. No one told me it was coming down.” The removal has raised charges of censorship and even possible discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Read the entire article by S. Utah Phillips passed away May 23
Utah Phillips died from complications of heart disease, survived by his wife, sons Duncan and Brendan, and daughter Morrigan. His wish was to be laid to rest in a plain, hand made wooden coffin to expedite his return to the earth, which was honored. Bruce “Utah” Duncan Phillips (May 14, 1935-May 23, 2008) was a labor organizer, folk singer, storyteller, and poet. He described the struggles of labor unions and the power of direct action. His parents were labor organizers and Phillips was a card-carrying member of the IWW (the wobblies). As a teenager, he ran away from home, rode the rails, and wrote songs. He met folk singer Rosalie Sorrels in the early 50s and it was Sorrels who started playing the songs that Phillips wrote and, through her, his music began to spread. He was a keeper of the stories and songs that might otherwise have passed into obscurity and was also a member of the great Traveling Nation, a community of hobos and railroad bums that populated the midwest along the rail lines. He recently gained a whole new audience through his joint album with Ani DeFranco. Some of his classic songs are Moose Turd Pie, Rock Salt & Nails, Green Rolling Hills, Daddy, What’s a Train, and Goodnight-Loving Train. Phillips lived his last 21 years in Nevada City, California where he worked on the start-up of a homeless shelter and the Peace and Justice Center. Utah has caught the westbound train! Farewell.

Savor Music: Victor Alvarez and his trio

Monday, May 26th, 2008

img_5012.jpg

Let’s dance and learn more about Savor Cuban Street MUsic ala Santa Fe NM. It must be a busy night as the computer is on slow crank. I am fading fast and have to get up early. I wanted to add more information from the Savor Music site as I was delightfully impressed by the famous Victor Alvarez. It’s good to actually hear someone before you learn that they are relatively famous. I got the notion that he was an exceptional musician from listening to him. (read previous post). So it was easy to go up to him during break and ask for his card. He responded graciously, and his site is full of information. Some is listed below. www.savormusic.com

Savor music includes several additional notable musicians too. Go the site for information. I included the three that I heard Sunday evening at Los Mayas. (See schedule information on previous blog or on their site.) These guys also are impressive by the schedule they keep. Many musicians complain about the difficulty of finding steady work in Santa Fe. Look at their schedule: they are busy!

VICTOR ALVAREZ:Cuban born award-winning mandolinist and guitarist, Victor has traveled the world with his salsa orchestra The LA Express. He has recorded under the labels of AAPA and North to South. Victor sings and plays mandolin as a Cuban laud and also plays guitar with Savor. (1)

Re: Cuban laud: [edit] Cuban laúd
There is also a Cuban laúd. Famously played by Barbarito Torres with the Buena Vista Social Club. It has the same appearance as the Spanish version only the tuning is different. The Cuban tuning is: D, A, E, B, F#, C# (or D).

DIEGO MAESTAS: Originally from New Mexico but having lived in other parts of the United States, Diego has dedicated his life to music. Mainly a player of the traditional drum set, Diego also delved into learning Latin percussion as well. Having spent many years perfecting his skills and knowledge of the basic Son Bolero and Batáconga patterns, he also shines on timbales. Diego was a “drop-in” of Habana State U’ he actually droped in now and then.( 5)

MARCO TOPO: This Italian born bass player is a graduate of Habana State U’. His many years of study and his many years of experience playing in a variety of jazz and blues bands have forged his solid musical personality. Upon meeting Victor and learning more about Cuban music, Marco has made it his new musical mission to master Cuban rhythm on the bass. (6)

Their story also opens our eyes and brings us the enjoyment from a nearby country that few of us can go see. We are truly blessed in Santa Fe. Here’s more info from their website.

SAVOR was started by Cuban born Victor Alavarez about seven years ago. He and his wife Nanette were both seasoned musicians long before moving to New Mexico having paid their musical dues while living in Houston, Texas for many years.

From his days as a soloist, combo mando-man, music minstrel and Latin big band leader back in Houston, Victor had always wanted to get back to his Cuban roots by playing the songs that he had grown up hearing in his native Havana. After leaving the big band scene in the big city, he and Nanette moved to New Mexico. It was not long before Victor realized that his heart yearned to express his Cuban roots through his talent as a mandolin player of thirty years.

The group started off as a quartet playing a variety of Latin tunes. The quartet included Victor on Mandolin and guitar and Nanette on ‘Lola’, the acoustic bass. After a few years of gigging, they recorded an album entitled “Muévete con Savor” in 2002.

Over the next few years, members came and went, but Victor and Nanette kept the group together. Though the group did play some Cuban songs, Victor was determined to follow his dream of playing more of a Cuban repertoire for audiences to learn about and enjoy Cuba’s often forgotten and underestimated contribution to Latin music.

In late summer of 2005, our Havana native began to find musicians that shared in his musical vision. The addition of New Mexico native drummer and percussionist J.J. Oviedo marked a turning point with the group. In early 2006, Victor, Nanette, and J.J. recorded a live album called “Savor: a taste of Cuba.” Soon, other friends and musicians came to Victor’s aide. With the addition of such musicians as Venezuelan born bassist and guitarist Ivan Castillo and later Cuban native and seasoned percussionist René Navaro, Victor found himself the desired and potent recipe for his music. Currently, the group performs as a trio or quartet that includes, but is not limited to: Mandolin, guitar, requinto guitar, acoustic/electric bass and various percussion instruments mostly comprised of bongos, congas, cowbell, and maracas. The music that the group performs includes Cuban and Afro-Cuban songs and rhythms based on the original Cuban ‘Son’; which is the grandfather of modern ‘Salsa’ rhythms. The music is performed in an informal street-like manner, making it raw and infectiously dance-able. In addition, SAVOR’s repertoire includes many other Latin American and Spanish songs for the eclectic and Latin hungry taste. The group that fans and music lovers now see performing in many venues in Santa Fe and Española is the product of several years of hard work and dedication to a personal quest of homage to Cuban music. We invite all who find themselves curious about Cuban rhythms and Cuba’s music to come out and hear us and party with us like on the streets of Habana Vieja!

Have some fun and party often around the town.

Listen to LOCAL RADIO for Great Programs and news

Friday, January 25th, 2008

img_4812.JPG

For WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT GO TO NEXT BLOG (BELOW)

Airwaves: Still can’t see them but we can hear their glorious results as clearly as we can hear the howling wind in a storm, or waves crashing on the shore, or the quiet rustling of lake meeting shoreline on a spring morn. Radio has been over commercialized, and may not be as BIG as it used to be, but in NM where we still have local programming (on some stations) and creative in depth coverage on a few more, radio is a quick way to get entertainment fast all day long.

If you were to read my sidebar, listing some of my keywords, you’d discover many of the topics you can get quickly on RADIO! Of course there is more. The best part that I enjoy about some of our local stations is learning about topics, musicians, news that I would otherwise not find the time for. Especially the BBC news which reminds me there’s a large world out there that I may not think about.

In Santa Fe, radio is so hot that it can raise over $150000 in less than 2 weeks for operating costs. Wish I could do that.

Did you know….NM Musicians & Cultural Affairs

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Late night blog duties…I wanted to check out some other resources about :

NEW MEXICO MUSICIANS

I love New Mexico because so many organizations work with our music makers to promote them and our incredible state. Some musicians as well as artists still say there aren’t enough places to get gigs or shows…pay isn’t terrific….however look around to the unexpected too! How many people would consider the State Fair, or a warehouse studio, or a small cafe, or have a concert at some church? Here some news for people who can act quickly and meet a deadline. Due August 15th! From the cultural Affairs site:

Deadline To Apply for TV Show August 15, 2007
Aug 15, 2007

You Tube and NM Music

Well I wanted to do something different. You’ll note one item is actually about Mexico. Even You Tube mixes up us, in all fairness, the new(MEXICO) did distinguish. These selections are all over the place and were the most recent listings. I was listening to different people talk about music, and trying to think of ways to improve my writing and vocab. REally though when you can hear someone sing or speak, then you don’t need my words as much! So click and enjoy. Also if you are a group not on youTube, what are you waiting for? Give millions of people a chance to hear you and meet you! Back soon.

PS: there’s plenty of music to enjoy all weekend long. Support your local musicaians, and enjoy all the top acts that take time to come here. Also it’s the weekend visit the zoo or go to a gallery opening! Visiting? Drive down RTE 66 in ALB and you’ll have so much to do…have fun!

MUSIC ALA CARTE: How does Santa Fe COmpare to ALBQ?

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

This weekend will be tough to compare. OzzFest 2007 in ALB on Thursday night and for how long? There are more clubs in ALB and there’s still the International Jazz Festival.
Have you been to Club Rhythm and Blues on 3523 Central Av? Or stopped by for a more contempoary scene at Burt Tiki’s Lounge at 313 Gold Av? Plus all the summerfest music and special events at how many Casino’s? The buzz is Albuquerque is hot this week with really great acts!

Just to give a heads up…also check out the pow wow scene, especially in Gallup and near Farmington. Do a little research, and there’s probably a powwow every weekend between now and October! Plenty of music, native style there.

Also on Sept 1 the Navajos will be having a 2nd annual Walk for Peace in Cortez CO. That’s right next to Farmington and Mesa Verde for the newcomers in the city.

So in Santa Fe, a much smaller city: there’ll be jazz at the Lensic, Chamber Music, tonight Thursday, all the local clubs with regular fair, and the Opera, AND SPANISH MARKET. Guess what? In addition to crafts and traditional artisans, there will be Hispanic music in all its seductive and lustrous forms. In the evening you’ll likely hear bands playing from balconies and clubs, street musicans scattered about, plaza shows, music at The NM Museums, plpayers at the galleries, the Ore House, and La Fonda. If the tourist big crowded time gets to you, then just go to Guadalupe for more music, food, and fun. Don’t forget Pranzo’s with jazz and theatre shows, or you can drive a little north to Lodge at Santa Fe, or south to Santa Fe Brewing company. For those who really want to go local, cruise Second St and Saint Michael’s.

I think this weekend Santa Fe is in high gear and will be cranking lots of TUNES! Wherever you are party (safely), afterall summer is short and the sizzle is HOT!

Spanish Market 7/27 and 7/28 Santa Fe Plaza.

Last note, please come to Santa Fe this weekend. However, if you are in ALB you might want to scan MSN’s city guide for ALB: an interesting article: 7 ways to travel cheap.

Yes, NM Jazz Festival, and Santa Fe Chamber Music, and Opera and there’s still MORE!

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Recently I have been focusing on some of the great LOCAL NM Music events. These are grand performances in both ALBUQUERQUE and Santa Fe. If you miss them, you’ll have to wait for another year. Summer is time to celebrate all the talent that visits our fine state. Certainly the local musicians will be active in the clubs, hotels: wherever an occassion calls. Buy their CD’s often for after the summer gigs might be harder to get. CD sales could help carry several musicans through. Also encourage your favorites to You Tube, as the world needs to hear their creativity.

The Santa Fe Chamber music series is incredible for it gives us a wider horizon of what can be done by some of the world’s top musicians. Their insight and exquiste permformances can truly be transformational.

Until a few years ago, I only intellectually understood the prfound beauty of Opera. Then I discovered Tuesday Night at the Opera on KSFR. The drama and stories may seem exaggerated and a bit much…however the depth of vocal expression and the profound embodiment of character can mesmerize all who want to experience music with their whole body. The music is fast and inviting, and please come to Santa Fe to listen under our expansive night sky.

As I was talking with a friend, about the above, shse questioned what else is going on? So here’s a few answers: go to cityscapes.com/albuquerque.

from another ad in the Ailbi: rember there’s big names at the CASINOS!. Sandia has some of these concerts coming up: August 5th HEART 8:30 PM. August 7th Hootie and the Blowfish,
August 20th Gipsy Kings August 28th Steve Miller Band…there’s a few more so go to The Allibi and look at the full page ad.

August 6 at 7 PM Rufus Wainwright and Sean Lennon at the Soleri Outdoor Amphitheater. Check out tickets.com The Black Crowes, Cake, and more will be performing.

On 8/10-812 There will be 75 PLUS bands at the Santa Fe MUSIKFEST. Local bands, and not so local plus a wide range of venue. How do I tell my friend about all the choices.

So remember ALL the casinos have their on-going acts and concerts…visit You Tube and do artist searches, plus browse some for new bands. And come back again next week for more information

*** Living A Virtuous Life

Ever think about the seven virtues? Nope, neither did I until I wrote this newsletter.

The seven virtues are not a moral straight jacket. They are more like a moral raft that keeps you afloat on the seas of life.

Understanding these seven on a personal level,
creates peace of mind and practical good sense.

Imagine what the world would be like if a significant group of individuals reflected on temperance. Particularly, our political and corporate leaders.

So if you are looking for some inspiration for your thoughts while you lie on the beach, hike in the mountains or wait in line at the airport, read this newsletter.

Chamber music in Santa Fe, and Sonny Rollins at the Lensic In Santa Fe

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Please re-read last weeks blogs. Go to YouTube and visit with some great musicians: especially Sonny Rollins who will soon be playing in BOTH alb and SF. Go to: www.nmjazz.org for details. Thirsty ear’s bluegrass festival will soon be on stage. Santa Fe’s Chamber music is happening now! The Santa Fe Chorale is celbrating their 25th anniversary with concerts now.

For the fun of it, an old show I had…

The photography of Mary Macintyre

Mary has been a member of Adlandpro since October 2006. She sells her photos individually or in sets. You can find a wide variety of subject mater on Mary’s site. Her prints are reasonably priced.

About the artist: Mary MacIntyre

In 1972, I bought an instantmatic camera at Springfield College and began for the second time my photographic exploration. 1974 soon after graduation from Franconia College, I bought my first 35MM camera and within a year I was showing in Maine.

Since then, I’ve been intermittently active as a photographer, and enjoy the challenge of nature wherever I am. I rarely take “tourist” pictures and I am fascinated both by composition and abstracted images. This show celebrates the feminine and delicate side of spring in New Mexico. All the pictures are not of spring but embrace the ecstacy of life surging wildly forth, and the joy of finding new ideas, hope, and rebirth after hard times. The buffalo provides a great mystical inspiration and helps us to become grounded. Find peace in your heart. Om. Mary MacIntyre
