There is more to art than life or music

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Don’t worry, it is the weekend and I won’t get heavy on the philosphy of these matters. However as you wander through Albuquerque’s galleries, and listen to great concerts, by the way SANTA FE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL will have several concerts in Albuquerque this year: at the KIMO theater, July 30th, and August 6 and 7th…save gas and get tickets near home!

On this tour the band is Mark Braud (trumper and vocal), Clint Maegden (vocal), Elliott Stackman Callier (reeds), Frederick Lonzo (trombone), Rickie Monie (piano), Walter Payton (bass and vocal) and Joseph Lastie Jr. (drums). NM Short Film wins Best of Show in Utah
Things We Do For Love won the Best of Show Grand Jury prize as well as Audience Favorite awards at the 2008 Fear No Film Festival in Salt Lake City. The short film was written and directed by NM filmmaker Don Gray and was shot in conjunction with the NM Film Technician Training Program at Northern New Mexico Community College in El Rito. It is about how far one family is willing to go to show their love for one another. Set in a small town in Northern New Mexico - coffins, fresh graves and a parade of odd funerals provide the backdrop for the story. The film was shot over five days in El Rito, Ojo Caliente and Abiquiu.

Listen to LOCAL RADIO for Great Programs and news

img_4812.JPG

For WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT GO TO NEXT BLOG (BELOW)

Airwaves: Still can’t see them but we can hear their glorious results as clearly as we can hear the howling wind in a storm, or waves crashing on the shore, or the quiet rustling of lake meeting shoreline on a spring morn. Radio has been over commercialized, and may not be as BIG as it used to be, but in NM where we still have local programming (on some stations) and creative in depth coverage on a few more, radio is a quick way to get entertainment fast all day long.

If you were to read my sidebar, listing some of my keywords, you’d discover many of the topics you can get quickly on RADIO! Of course there is more. The best part that I enjoy about some of our local stations is learning about topics, musicians, news that I would otherwise not find the time for. Especially the BBC news which reminds me there’s a large world out there that I may not think about.

In Santa Fe, radio is so hot that it can raise over $150000 in less than 2 weeks for operating costs. Wish I could do that.

Jesse Reichek: Concerning the Mystical in Art
This exhibit at the UNM Art Museum closes Dec. 21st and is worth a trip to UNM. Reichek was one of the most prolific and least known post-war, American painters. Described as difficult but an American treasure, Reichek created his own vocabulary, a lexicon of calligraphic squiggles, snaking lines and mutating shapes, moving across grids of rectangles and squares. Like others before him, Reichek blurred the distinction between figure and ground, negative and positive, creating tension and movement that in his best canvases give off a visual hum. He created over 3000 paintings in the later half of the 20th century and chose not to exhibit his work for three decades. He died in 2005 at age 89. In the history of modern art, Jesse Reichek offers a unique and extraordinary accomplishment. (Image: Untitled, 1966, Lithograph, The Tamarind Archive Collection, UNM Art Museum)

The Santaland Diaries at The Box
The Santaland Diaries is a brilliant evocation of what a slacker’s Christmas must feel like. Out of work, the slacker decides to become a Macy’s elf during the holiday crunch. At first the job is simply humiliating, but once the thousands of visitors start pouring through Santa’s workshop, he becomes battle weary and bitter. Taking consolation in the fact that some of the other elves were television extras on One Life to Live, he grins and bears it, occasionally taking out his frustrations on the children and parents alike. The play ends with an unexpected moment of goodwill - but you’ll have to check that out yourself. Runs through Dec. 22nd.

img_4735.JPG

MISC 1: On Sunday, I get to go to Rio Chama for brunch to celebrate Sam’s birthday. Look up Rio Chama Restaurant and look for the upcoming review. This may become a tradition as we did the same last year. Perhaps I can get a menu to give even greater details!

The true Southwest awaits you in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Come immerse yourself in our rich culture and heritage, rooted in centuries of history. Soak in our blue skies and sun that shines 310 days a year- perfect for outdoor activities. Breathe in the high desert air scented with sage and piñon, and you’ll understand why Albuquerque, NM is a destination like no other.

Whether you want to shop for authentic Native American jewelry, try hot air ballooning, explore living history museums, enjoy Albuquerque events and festivals, sample local cuisines or hit the golf courses and spas, Albuquerque has you covered.

For business or pleasure, Albuquerque is a must-see destination in the American Southwest. Albuquerque—It’s a Trip®—you’ll never forget.

It’satrip, found in a google search for Albuquerque Day Trips, has a lot of what most people would come to Albuquerque for. When I travel, I like to explore also off the beaten path. When I visit Albuquerque, I usually look for what is not available in Santa Fe. It is a big city and has lots to offer and can be overwhelming too.

From this site I chose the topic: African Americans….here’s a little about what I found:

African American Culture & HeritageAlbuquerque is home to a rich and thriving African-American community including artists, entrepreneurs, families and individuals all tightly woven within the fabric of the city. The Black presence here reaches back to the first wave of Spanish explorers, and the history of this community includes societal and cultural challenges that, while similar to other cities, is unique to this region.

Perhaps the most infamous name in local Black history is that of Estevanico, sometimes referred to as “Esteban,” or, “Stephen the Black.” Born in 1503, Estevanico was a Spanish Moor from North Africa enslaved at a young age by the Portuguese and sold in 1520 to Andres Dorantes de Carranza, a Spanish nobleman. In 1527, Estevanico and Dorantes sailed from Europe with the explorer Panfilo de Narvaez on an expedition to conquer Florida. This expedition turned into one of the most epic journeys ever recorded and eventually led to Estevanico–the first African known to have set foot on the continental U.S.–becoming a central figure in the establishment of New Mexico.

In 1539 Estevanico found himself going north on another expedition to find the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola. Sent ahead as an advance scout, Estevanico continued alone to present day New Mexico, one of the first non-Natives to set foot here. Almost as quickly as he arrived, however, Estevanico’s exploits were cut short. As he approached the Zuni pueblo of Hawikuh he was killed by suspicious villagers.

Fast forward from that auspicious beginning to the 1870s, when Albuquerque saw the first growth spurt of its African American population with the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad. Black communities became established in the South Broadway and Barelas areas along the railroad corridor. From the 1920s through the 1940s, Black businesses thrived in spite of the discrimination inherent in the pre-civil rights era. Establishments such as the legendary swing club, Chet and Pert’s, catered to the small but growing Black community. Over the next few decades the population of African Americans in Albuquerque grew steadily, with another bump coinciding with the opening of Kirtland military base.

Today, African-Americans comprise just over 3% of Albuquerque’s population. While the community may not be large, its members contribute enormously through the arts and other cultural activities. If you’re interested in exploring Albuquerque’s African American community, there are a number of events, groups and resources that provide an easy entry point.
For cutting-edge theater and performance, check out Out Ch’Yonda, located at 925 4th Street, a few blocks south of downtown. Be it beat box music, poetry, dance, fringe theater or anything else, Out Ch’Yonda is never boring. 505-385-5634.
The best resource to get started for finding African American artists is the New Mexico African American Artists Guild, put together by painter and printmaker Kenneth Winfrey. It’s the most comprehensive list of websites and gallery locations in the Albuquerque area for African American artists working in all media.
If you enjoy sculpture, Fred Wilson, along with wife Kristen, is one of Albuquerque’s premier large format artists. Ike Davis, who does his thing on the western edge of the city, has been an Albuquerque name for more than 20 years.
One of the more interesting galleries in the East Nob Hill Area is Pearls of the Antilles, a pan-African artists’ collective. You’ll find Pearls at 3716 Central SE, 505-265-0982.
For music, be sure to check out what’s happening at The New Mexico Jazz Workshop, which includes the popular Jazz and Blues series during …..the above from www.itsatrip.org Visit this site for more details and ideas.

So to expand some of the news, here’s a few other ideas:

New Mexico at Christmas
By Teresa Plowright, About.com

Filed In:Family Vacations

Christmas Wedding
4. New Mexico at Christmas
New Mexico is one of my favorite regions in the US, and though mainly known as a summer destination, it also shines — literally– at Christmastime.

With its large Hispanic population, the celebration of Christmas is a major festival. A beautiful aspect of this celebration is the appearance everywhere of “luminarias”: “little lanterns” in Spanish, these are little paper bags with sand (for stability) and a small candle inside. inside.

Thousands of these small flames line streets, staircases, doorways. You can enjoy luminaria displays in Old Town Albuquerque, Santa Fe, or in smaller and Taos. (Taos is a great place to visit with kids, not least because of its unique three-story native American pueblo: read about visiting Taos New Mexico.) Taos also offers great skiing a short drive away.

Below are some details on holiday events:

Albuquerque, River of Lights
At the Albuquerque Biological Park throughout December: featuring hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights in various themes; family activities; entertainment; food and crafts; dinner with Santa; dinner with Father Time.

Albuquerque and Santa Fe: Luminaria Tour
On Christmas Eve, the main plazas of both cities are decorated with thousands of luminarias. In Santa Fe, cider is served, carols are sung and groups walk to the nearby Cross of the Martyrs.

Old Town, Albuquerque: Holiday Shop & Stroll
Early in December, this event features late closing for shops, free rides between Old Town and the River of Lights (above), lighting of the holiday tree and a children’s parade with Santa Claus.

Native American Dances
Various animal dances occur during the winter season, including the buffalo, eagle or game animal dances on and following Christmas, at the Jemez pueblo.

Sometimes life and biz changes quickly. Faster than the seasons. The way we approach these changes can show our faith and character. Holidays can sseem to add to voltality. It’s best to make sure you have some r’n'r time to help ease the strain.

Santa Fe was getting snow on and off throughout today. The mountain has already received 26″ of new snow and expects to be open the ski slopes on Friday. I was going into a shopping center in a good part of town. Two robust tall elegantly dressed women were complaining about the much needed snow. “Who got all this snow?” the first demanded. “God”, I said, as I passed by. “Oh yes” they chorused. “Amen.” There was a moment of silence, and then I heard, “OK God, stop this mess, now.” Within a few minutes the snow stopped. I hope they noticed. As I left the mall awhile later, I said, “Ok God, its all right to snow again,” and within 5 minutes we got a lot of heavier snow. This is a true story, thank you God.

Let’s see if I call scounge up some holiday events.

Hmmm… to find the right photo…well, I chose a few random photos. I drove around town and did about a 128 pictures today. My other computer was working very slow and I took too much time trying to get a few things done that. You know those nights, I’m sure.

One of the major concerns about this scenerao re: oil exploration is that they may do underground explosions that can have negative effects on wells and water quality. Do all the research that you can to learn more about what happens to small communities when the OIL INDUSTRY comes to town.

So you see, they’ll b e all over town and please do attend.

The excitement is up, we’ve had more snow on the mountain. A couple of more storms and perhaps they’ll be able to open. I drove up a little ways and it was cold! I stopped at a fav place and quickly shot a few pictures. The forest smelled so good, the river was flowing, there was a bit of snow on the ground and I was glad to return to the warm car. Although I did not go far up the mountain, there was a 20 or more degree difference between town and the mountain.

I had a great time exploring dirt back roads on the way back and seeing how the million dollar homes neighborhoods felt. Well maybe most were the $500,000 -$750,000 homes. Ocassionally there were great views, they were also densely planned on hills and cliffs. I frankly would choose another neighborhood. More land would be preferrable.

Went out to eat at Carmen’s Pizza tonight. I had a Pasta Primervera over Penne. It was a huge protion and I actually ate it all! Pat had tomato soup and garlic bread. Reasonable priced. medium service, and good food. They weren’t very busy and so there was an intimate atmosphere. Since late night burgers wasn’t open (they reportedly have good vegetarian options as well, Carmen’s (right next door) was fine. They are located on the corner of Alta Vista and Cerrillos.

Finding the Holy Light

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

img_4282.JPG

img_0859_2.JPG

img_2336.JPG

Where does your light find you?

Is it at dawn, while you still dream, before awakening?
Perhaps while you walk at noon and catch the sky’s breath?
At home in the dark while you wrestle with frustration?

Where does your light inform you,
Of who you really are?

take a moment of silence to consider the light within you.
Make notes.

These blogs offer fun springboards where you can dive off and explore notions and themes suggested here. I believe there are 4 weeks of Advent proecceding Christmas. So we are close to the middle of advent. I’m curious to see what I can find on this subject. I’ll combine it with Finding the Holy Light.

Well this wasn’t as easy as I thought. I wanted to mix the wonder of NM’s concerts with light and wonder…not much on youtube. You could go to KSFR to Native American Radio and hear some beautiful music recorded, hopefully on podcast.

Nature photographer Jerry Goffe at Open Space
On Dec. 1st renowned nature photographer Jerry Goffe will share his knowledge and talent with nature lovers and fellow photographers at the Open Space Visitor Center. Within his presentation Jerry will focus on the rich history of the Rio Grande valley and its importance to the many migratory birds it accommodates. Jerry will offer advice to photographers after the lecture. Bring your camera and tripod and practice photographing the Sandhill cranes that winter in the Open Space. They can often be seen in groups of 80-150 on the property and among them many other migratory birds and predators search for a meal. Hawks and coyotes can often be seen lurking in the fields and photographic opportunities abound. Photography has been Jerry’s professional career and personal passion for over 35 years. His photographs have appeared in Sunset Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine and National Geographic to mention a few. He is a volunteer, guide, photography instructor and contributor to the Friend’s newsletter as Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Fabulous prizes - enter now!!!

Please go to abqarts.com to take our online survey. While the survey allows you to remain nameless - in order to be eligible for the great prizes, we must know how to contact you. This information will not be used for any other purpose.

We will draw for prizes for performance tickets and gift cards on December 14.

Attention: do you have your tickets yet? Tis concert is on NOVEMBER 29TH
THURSDAY at 7:30 PM. It will be an incredible ensemble. Bring friends. Young and OLD because everyone can learn from and be amazed at such an opportunity. If you love jazz, or just want to introduce the kids to a mega cultural event, it’s best to call now for your tickets!
You’ll not be disappointed. I think I have to work but YOU PROBABLY DON”T!

This could be a concert of a lifetime. If any of you are band directors, get tickets for the whole band! If you are a bit lame like me, you could always get a CD or DVD, but live is always better and electric. If you give lessons or play jazz, this is a mandatory meeting so you can inhale each note and hold it in your heart. You already know how such an experience can enrich and inspire. Your heart quickens and the world (and music) expand.

Yes there’s so much going on. Something for everyone. Save this and send to your friends so they know too. ABQ arts is always great because they have such a variety of information. Use this as a reference guide.

ALSO REMEMBER the SANTA FE FILM FESTIVAL starting this week.
