Another opportunity to hear Chirgilchin
Chirgilchin were the runaway hit of ¡Globalquerque! 2006. Everyone was captivated by their otherworldly vocal techniques. Atmospheric and mesmeric, throat singing is almost too difficult to describe in words. It must be heard to be believed-the music, produced by resonating low sounds in the throat, creates a middle note and a haunting, flute-like harmonic. Chirgilchin (meaning “mirage” or “miracle”) is a group of musicians from Tuva, a small Russian province north of Western Mongolia. Singing the ancient folk songs in the Tuvan language, the group also plays hand made instruments. The ensemble has appeared in concert throughout the United States, Russia, Finland, Belgium, France, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, and Canada. Presented by AMP Concerts. Great Big Sea at the Historic El Rey
The St. John’s-based, Juno-nominated band Great Big Sea fuses Newfoundland traditional music with modern pop in a crowd-pleasing formula both heartfelt and vital. A pure force of nature, much like the ocean surge they take their name from, Great Big Sea’s blend of instruments like mandolin, bodhran, fiddle, and concertina, along with their vocal harmonies, revels in the melodies they create and the Newfoundland tunes they love. Their ninth studio album, Fortune’s Favour, sees them boldly embracing new sounds and new ideas, fearlessly pushing the boundaries of their own art and music. In their lifelong quest to marry the traditional music of Newfoundland with their own pop explorations, Check them out on You Tube. Joel Harrison’s Vox Americana at the Outpost
Guitarist, composer and vocalist, Joel Harrison’s music defies categorization. Equally at home writing songs or complex chamber music; playing modern jazz or bar blues, the Washington D.C. native, who now lives in New York City, graduated from Bard College in 1980 with a BA in composition and performance. Vox Americana is a 65-minute, multi- movement suite whose stylistic palette, while based in jazz aesthetics, ranges through classical, Appalachian, African, and Latin American retaining its own unique probing voice. Vox Americana addresses questions of American identity, and ranges in mood from dark and elegaic to explosive and affirmative. Accompanying the music is a text that was culled, in non-linear fashion, from asking hundreds of people the following questions: Who are you? What does it mean to be an American? Where is our country headed? Vox Americana features some of the most prominent members of the new generation of New York musicians - Joel Harrison, guitar & vocals; Dave Binney, saxophone; Heun Choi, cello; Chris Howes, violin; Daniel Kelly, piano; Jerome Harris, bass; and Jordan Perlson, drums.

Beautiful Losers next Art in Film offering
Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation. In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture. Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.

YDI Mi Voz Auditions for Fall 2008 Session
Youth Development Inc.’s (YDI) Mi Voz program teaches above-the-line filmmaking skills to middle school age kids. This will be the fourth 16-week session for YDI Mi Voz. Each session has a theme: The Fall 2008 session’s theme is The Zia’s Heart and is about New Mexican art and artists. The Zia’s Heart is a series of short documentaries that will be produced, directed, shot, edited and delivered by a group of middle school age students in Albuquerque. Each short documentary will spotlight a different art form produced by a local artist. Students will shadow chosen artists in different fields and document their creativity, their craft, and how it ties in to identifying Albuquerque and New Mexico as unique in the arts scene. YDI Mi Voz is a safe and free after school program for middle school age young people where they learn all aspects of visual storytelling using digital video. The purposes of the program are: 1. It contributes to building a “native workforce” for New Mexico’s blossoming film industry, giving young people a head start in using industry standard tools and techniques. 2. The finished products will expose New Mexico’s art and artists to a broader audience, letting its audience know the value of what has become such a large part of our city and state identities. 3. By providing Mi Voz classes under the YDI banner, students and their families have access to the wide range of social services YDI provides. We are actively seeking out participants for this session. During the 16-week after school course, students will be taught producing, directing, shooting, and editing using top of the line digital video equipment. The course is free to participants, but interested students must audition first to gauge their interest and dedication. 14 students will be selected. Classes are taught by Marcos Baca and Brian Beeler, working professionals in the area of digital art and filmmaking. 4 youth instructors who have participated previously will be at every class to mentor new students, as well as guest lectures by UNM Cinematic Arts Professors and other independent producers.

SIERRA LEONE’S REFUGEE ALL STARS

Near the turn of the 21st century, rebel forces attacked Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone, forcing a panicked mass exodus to neighboring countries. Among the thousands who fled were musicians and future band mates Reuben Koroma and Francis Lamgba (Franco) who connected in a refugee camp in Guinea, West Africa. Along with Reuben’s wife Grace they began making music for their fellow refugees, providing a welcome distraction to life in the camps. Safety in the Kalia camp quickly disintegrated, however, when it came under attack from the Guinean army and citizenry. The fledgling band was evacuated and relocated to a camp set deep in the remote Guinean countryside.
It was here that, thanks to a Canadian refugee aid organization, the developing band was able to acquire the rusted-out sound system and beat up electric guitars that helped officially launch the group. It was also in this camp that American documentary filmmakers Banker White and Zach Niles along with Canadian singer-songwriter Chris Velan encountered the group, which by that point also included Black Nature, a teenaged orphan with a gift for rap, as well as Abdulrahim Kamara (Arahim) and Mohamed Bangura (Medo), both of whom had had limbs amputated by the rebels. The first-time filmmakers followed the band for three years as they moved from camp to camp. While filming, the United Nations sponsored a trip for the group to return to Freetown so they could see for themselves that the war was indeed over and safe for thousands of refugees to return home. As part of the trip, the UNHCR offered the band the opportunity to make their first studio recordings, which led to leader Reuben Koroma uniting the core group from the refugee camp with his former band mates, The Emperors, many of whom had remained in Freetown during the war. Together they recorded their debut album as Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars. The current touring lineup features members of both entities. Now Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars tour the world spreading their message of peace and love in a “can’t help but dance” show that fans from all musical backgrounds can enjoy. With a spirited fusion of traditional West African music, roots reggae and rhythmic traditional folk, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars craft music that transforms and uplifts.

Road Trip Videos of New Mexico

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

What these folks may not have included in their videos:
where they stopped for lunch…I am still hungering for a lunch at the GUADALUPE CAFE in Santa Fe. Breakfast is good too.

The lovely gardens they relaxed in, in Albuquerque NM and Santa Fe, and Taos.

The long and gorgeous ride along the Rio Grande up to Taos.

The summer Indian Dances at Pojaque Pueblo.

The great pub with local jazz musicans.

The three affordable NM Casino concerts in and out of Albuquerque.

The night at the Opera where they volunteered and ushered at the show and got to see it for free. The party that followed where they had extensive chats with the aprrentices.

Camping in the national forests, and the coyote visitor.

Yes there is more stuff to do in a 30 mile radius of most towns here than most often imagine. Santa Fe Sierra Club has a book dedicated to day hikes in Santa Fe. Many miss the wonderous tour and dinner at Santa Clara Pueblo and fewer still know about their campground magnificant! It might do good to talk to someone like me to discover secret places in New Mexico.

NOW FOR SOME VIDEOS: ( but first: have you made a scrapbook from your last trip? Turned it into a slide show? Then check this out:Create a free Smilebox scrapbook in 5 minutes. Just drag photos into amazing e-designs. Email them free.

More New Mexican Weekend Entertainment: Dreaming about NM?

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

img_4291.JPG

img_2360.JPG

img_1448a.jpg
Please take time to go to the videos at the end of this blog. They represent many viewpoints making different stories and song to honor our Veterans (there are a few videos before that). I remind you of all the veterans still living too. They may be your family, your co-workers, or the people on the street. They have all served for us. A co-worker commented tome tonight: I’m disappointed that our company doesn’t think to show more respect to Veterans. He has a point there. Perhaps we can all learn from him and take some time to help or reach out or say “thank-you” to the living Veterans among us. Peace. Amen.

Hey it’s the weekend and time for FUN! At this special time of the year it’s best to squeeze some extra R&R time before the hectic holiday season which is right around the corner! I’m already so far behind…I need to remember you start from where you are. Which right now in is a puddle of crocodiles. Realize that we have had a dry spell and to even find a puddle is hard! Still fun can be nice. So www.abqarts.com is a great place to start reviewing what’s happening around NM. Also if your life is like mine then you also need fun for theraputic reasons to lighten up, rest, and get a new perspective.

Welcome to undergroundARTS, a weekly newsletter of happenings and opportunities in the arts in the Albuquerque area.

Western life depicted in Mike Bridge’s artwork
Mike F. Bridge is a transplanted Texan and history buff who has lived in Albuquerque for 23 years. His grandfather worked at the legendary Matador Ranch in the Texas Panhandle in the early 1900s and Mike had an aspiration to produce many western pieces featuring ranch life. His appreciation for the splendor, rich beauty, and ample history found in the Southwest has inspired many of his works of art throughout the years.

Found Magazine: There Goes the Neighborhood
In this live performance, the duo of Davy and Peter Rothbart return to the Guild’s stage to celebrate Found #5 - The Crime Issue with more tunes and tales based upon forgotten discards. Letters, scribbled notes, laundry lists, photos, emails … these are what Found Magazine has been made famous for and their latest finds make for a hilarious, sometimes cringe- worthy evening of entertainment.
Performance Friday, Nov. 9, 8pm
Also at the Guild will be a five-film mini-series for the week of Veteran’s Day. These films offer different looks at returning soldiers from WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. From the changing relationships seen in The Best Years of Our Lives to the traumatized reactions of the men in Targets and A Hatful of Rain, these films offer complex narratives where adjusting to civilian life is never easy and ticker-tape parades are nowhere in sight.

He will present a unique repertoire of his own compositions and work by other composers such as John Zorn. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinal describes his music as a musical orient express whose themes pass from Hungarian gypsy to Slovenian waltz to Middle Eastern wait without stopping at the borders. So, if you are adventurous, check out this concert at the Outpost. We couldn’t find anything on YouTube to give you a preview, so you’re on your own on this one!

Po’Girl with Carolyn Mark
Po’Girl started innocently enough back in 2002 when Allie and Trish, then flophouse roommates in East Vancouver, formed a duo. Their sole intent: singing “creaky old jazz songs.” Two years later, the duo found they had become, among other things, a five-piece band of multi-instrumentalists. Signed to Nettwerk Records (their first album Vagabond Lullabies came out in 2004), these folk festival darlings soon were headlining venues of enviable size and sharing stages with the likes of David Byrne, Richie Havens, Ani DiFranco, Michael Franti, Utah Philips and Penny Lang. Home to You, Po’Girl’s new record has captured the breezy, summer night feeling that their live show evokes. And thematically, it seems that the last two years of solid touring have had an effect. Most of the new material is about travel, longing and the notion of “home.” All self-confessed former “teen-age runaways,” it appears that Po’Girl has found their new home together, driving down a winding road in Shaggy the Love Van. The songs have become gorgeous documentations of this feeling.

The missing pieces….9/11 and….

Monday, September 10th, 2007

For some reason, the following section did not appear in the 2 previous posts. Yes, I am refecting on the world today and the events of 9/11. They do go together. We will get up to go to work. We may go out with friends, and listen to a band. We may not watch the news. We may be tired of hearing the old story. We may even spend more time thinking about our family member who has died since or…dinner may be macroni and chees because we are too tired to cook. This is all normal. Still, please stop and remember.

Following this should be some events from the alibi. Also the city of Santa Fe and many other organizations are going to build a new building for Santa Fe Teens. Bravo! Read about it in ALbuquerque arts. www.abqarts.com or maybe it was www.alibi.com.

9/11: Let’s take a pause to remember those who died, the few days of unity and world support and mourning, when USA flags sold out, and were waving proudly across the land.
Take time to pray again.

So Wednesday night’s line-up would make most of younger co-workers say ALbuquerque is an oldsters town. (That’s a big complaint about Santa Fe). There’s lots of open mikes, jams, and DJ’s playing their normal gigs. I try to include a variety of events and music. Lots of people are back to school, and Wednesday now takes a new color: work.

Please notice Trish Yearwood is playing at the Sandia Casino, please come give a warm welcome.

One incredible newsbite is: Studio 21 will have a new expanded 2 story building built for teen programs in the creative arts in Santa Fe. This is an amazing program supported by many organizations: including the city of Santa Fe! BRAVO! Read about it in the alibil.com (Every city should have a program like this!)

Ending thought: How many innocent people more since 9/11 have died? Are we safer now than then? Are we a stronger more peaceful country than then? Is the world safer? Are the terrorists stronger? Are there more terrorists than then?

However you respond, can we build peace with honor, and create unity in our homeland? How? On these days, especially this week, gather your prayers and love and share with one another.

The ERIC McFADDEN TRIO

Like protagonists from some epic western novel, the Eric McFadden Trio arrives on the jaded contemporary music scene preceded by anxious rumors and curious anticipation. A veteran of celebrated underground bands including Liar, the Eric McFadden Experience, Alien Lovestock and IZM, Eric McFadden’s sinister songs, vampiric vocals and flamenco-rock guitar improvisations have made him an icon along America’s western seaboard. Lest you dismiss the preceding as absurd hyperbole, consider the fact that McFadden has performed and recorded with the lordly likes of Bo Diddley, the late Joe Strummer, Widespread Panic, psychobilly rockers The Reverend Horton Heat, blues troubadour Keb Mo’, Rolling Stone Ron Wood, Primus kahuna Les Claypool and others. He was voted “Best Guitarist” by the New Mexico Weekly and “Guitarist of the Year” by San Francisco’s Zero magazine. And in 2000, McFadden was recruited as a touring member of George Clinton’s P-Funk All Stars, a distinction that thrusts McFadden into the pantheon of funk-rock guitar idols.
Now, McFadden has teamed with acoustic bassist James Whiton and drummer Paulo Baldi to form a trio whose electro-acoustic sound, impressionistic songs and virtuoso antics suggest an obscenely voluptuous hybrid of the Clash, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Black Sabbath, Q.O.T.S.A., Tom Waits, Django Reinhardt and spaghetti western composer Sergio Leone. CADILLAC SKY

AMAZING BLUEGRASS!
Blessed with an embarrassment of riches, such as ear bending songwriting, head turning vocals, and eye-popping instrumentalists, the heart pounding music of Cadillac Sky is an exhilarating experience for all the senses.
Born in October of 2002, Cadillac Sky over the past few years has entrenched itself as a major force in the world of bluegrass music. C-Sky is the creation of Bryan Simpson (mandolin, fiddle, vocals), Matt Menefee (banjo), Mike Jump (guitar, vocals), Clint Sturgeon (electric bass, vocals), and Ross Holmes (fiddle, vocals). Their original sound is a product of their upbringing; being raised and steeped in the staunch, honest sounds of bluegrass stalwarts such as Bill Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs, all the while, keeping a curious ear and an open mind, and consistently sneaking out from under the watchful eyes of their elders and discovering the groundbreaking sounds of New Grass Revival, The David Grisman Quintet, and artists from other genres such as The Beatles. Their deep respect for the music of their bluegrass forefathers, and their eagerness to find a sound all their own has created a dizzying combination. Their energetic onstage persona and melodic sensibilities will bring an audience to their feet while their instrumental expertise and musical maturity will satisfy the most jaded of critics. Their critically acclaimed, debut CD, “Talent Show” was hailed by Bluegrass Unlimited with comments like, “a powerful sound with rich and accurate lead singing, engaging composing, whip crack instrumental precision, soulful harmonies, and an attention to arranging that dazzles without distracting.”
The band was chosen as one of the twelve acts from hundreds of applicants, to showcase at the 2004 IBMA World of Bluegrass Trade Show, a very prestigious honor. And have recently been featured in publications such as Bluegrass Unlimited, Bluegrass Now, and Banjo Newsletter. C-Sky has toured all over the country the past few years with stops that include Tennessee, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Washington, and of course, Texas. J. Reed, RPM Press, Sept. 04’

MICHAEL HEARNE & SXSW

Over the past several years, Michael Hearne and South by Southwest have created a new and unique kind of music. “Southwestern Americana” as Michael calls it “Songs about the southwest with an acoustic feel”. Michael Hearne’s incredibly smooth voice and amazing acoustic guitar style combined with Carmen Acciaioli’s musical mastery of the steel guitar, fiddle, mandolin, dobro, and hammered dulcimer, with the extremely talented Zeke Severenson on stand up and electric bass and you have what people all over the Southwest and beyond call their favorite band.

#1: SUPPORT FREE PRESS
#2: Support FIVE magazine and NEW MEXICAN WOMAN

Yes this includes advertising and telling advertizers that you appreciate their support. Five is one of the most exciting new magazines (local) that I’ve read. However this month the issue is short and sweet. Go READ THEM and eat local. If you are endowed, or an extremely generous entrpreneur send financial resources to boost this mag’s longevity. If you wantNew Mexicans to have access to more environmental news and eco issue ideas: send $$$. Also advertize!

Quirky, fun, light, and straightforward. These ladies are terrfic, direct, and they’ve got a llifestyle message for the eco conscious world. www.thedittybops.com, a must see innovative website.

Of course, if you go to www.readfive.com, there’s an article too. www.youandisavetheworld.com (the dittybops’ othersite)

Justin Townes Earl in another trail blzing youn musician. Probably by now you’ve listened to the above clip. Go to YouTube.com and you will find you can create a concert for he has at least 22 videos. Top this: he also writes most of his lyrics. Sounds good too. Go see him at KTAOS Solar Center on Sept 1. Go to KTAOS.com for tickets and more upcoming events!

Another intersting show is Michael Hearne’s 15th BIG BARN DANCE, yes, www.bigbarndance.com and/or www.michaelhearne.com

I hope this is the right Michael Hearne. There’ll be at least 24 groups on September 6,7,8 2007. (I just love You Tube for research and finding great music).

When you go KTAOS, you’ll also find there’s still good news and music for August too.

Just a note: Santa Fe and NM is famous for FILM: Here’s a FIlmfest that will catch your heart and soul. New Mexico’s International Wildllife Film Fest Santa Fe at the LENSIC on 9/28-29, Taos 9/21-22 at the TCA www.Riversandbirds.org

I hope you enjoy this and visit these artists both on the web and at their concerts. Support your musicans! Mary

Tag Your It and Roasting Green Chile

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

www.local-iQ.com You ever play tag: you run like crazy and suddenly you are the one running after everyone else. So I am doing my homework and now you ARE IT! Find me some local chile loving musicians who would love a spot to be interviewed. Leave me comments. Suggestions. If you are a musician, actor, writer, artist: contact me and I will feature you! Of course, uploadable pictures would help too. If you know of a great upcoming event: tell me about it.

In the meantime I picked up a little paper called iQ. Their link starts this blog. They of course are online too. If you go online you may find ways to get free tickets. Also they have a list of free musical events too. You can expand your tates and venues with the free music nights. Of course I love to tell you about other great events that cost $$ too.

If you haven’t gathered yet, you can have frequent incredible fun here in NM. Here’s an aticle copied from iQ…looks a lot like a press release interview. It is our standard big time fundraiser. Read on:
Youth Development, Inc. (YDI), New Mexico’s premier charitable organization helping underprivileged youth succeed, is joining forces with the Ramsey Lewis Trio, one of the legendary jazz trios in America, to raise money for YDI’s Campaign for Kids.

YDI’s programs include tutoring, after-school activities, gang intervention, drop-out prevention, family counseling services, emergency teen shelter, youth sports, internships, scholarships, parenting skills, leadership development, public housing assistance, community corrections, GED studies, early childhood education via Head Start centers, substance abuse and AIDS education and many others.

The Ramsey Lewis Trio will perform a 90 minute show to benefit YDI. There are a limited number of VIP tickets, priced at $100, available through the YDI Foundation by calling 242-7306 ext. 18. Also general admission tickets, priced at $35 and $50, and student tickets are available for $17 through Ticketmaster by calling 883-7800 or logging on to Ticketmaster.com.

For more information please call Tricia Hiser Scheideman, 505-242-7306 extension 36, or email thiser@ydinm.org.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=pljAOhBOuZY

So here’s just a little information to whet (wet) your appetite. Remember these kids need your bucks to have a better chance of turning their lifes in a positive direction.

If you go to the iQ site, you’ll find the wide variety of musica listed. If you like any kind of music, enjoy reviews, and other excellent ideas for scoping out entertainment and culture in many forms all over the state, read on….yes and find the opportunity to get some free tickets.

How’s the Albuquerque aroma lately? Driving along Santa Fe roads I can now enjoy the seasonal tradition: they’re roasting green chile. If you are a newcomer, don’t stand too close to the roaster, because you might start coughing and eyes a watering! The rest of us will stock up for winter warmth and great taste! Hey guys if you are just cruising, take time to stop and get your mama some chile? Why make her do ALL the work? Get some for your auntie too: afterall they feed you whenever you show up don’t they? Be cool and buy that chile.
