The Frogville studio is a case-study on the notion that doing something yourself is the best way to make it happen. Starting with borrowed gear and what they describe as a less-than-adequate understanding of how any of it worked, studio founders John Treadwell and Bill Palmer have elaborated those humble beginnings into a shockingly great production facility that frankly blows my mind every time I spin one of their discs.

Treadwell, an artist and self-described “professional listener,” is also the cofounder of the Frogville Planet label. He teamed up with musician Nathan Moore in 2002 to promote a small group of unsigned regional bands. Faced immediately with the need to record, they took a leap of faith and set up a temporary home studio, reasoning that their limited budget would last a lot longer if they didn’t spend it on hourly fees at the commercial studios in town.

Palmer, a member of Hundred Year Flood, one of the original Frogville bands, stepped into the role of lead engineer for the fledgling studio. His first record proved the concept that it’s possible to make a great record at home. His partnership with Treadwell has made the studio what it is today — a place that evokes wonderfully emotive performances from its artists, then captures those performances beautifully using a fully respectable collection of professional mics and outboard gear. The studio is unpretentious by design, but more importantly, it helps John and Bill create a relaxed vibe that absolutely translates into the finished mixes.

The label has enjoyed a lot of success, including awards from the local music press, nationwide radio play and presence on the charts, and a fan base large enough to support its annual FrogFest music festival. And they’re not stopping — just “five years into the 10-year plan,” they’re continuing to crank out new music, and they’ve begun working with outside producers to help fuel their own creative growth.

Geoff Muldaur at the Outpost
Geoff Muldaur is one of the great voices and musical forces to emerge from the folk, blues and folk-rock scenes in Cambridge, MA and Woodstock, NY. Guitarist, Richard Thompson says of Muldaur, “There are only three white blues singers, and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them.” Muldaur made a series of highly influential recordings as a founding member of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and Paul Butterfield’s Better Days group, as well as collaborations with then- wife Maria (”Midnight at the Oasis”) Muldaur. In the 1980’s he left the road and concentrated on composing film and television scores, garnering an Emmy in the process. He produced offbeat albums for Lenny Pickett and the Borneo Horns and the Richard Greene String Quartet, and his definitive recording of “Brazil” provided the seed for Terry Gilliam’s film of the same name. Muldaur re-entered the touring world in the mid-1990s with his magical voice and singular approach to American music completely intact. He recently toured Japan, Scotland, Ireland, England and Sweden as well as the Pacific Northwest in the U.S. Muldaur has appeared at Lincoln Center, the Getty Art Center, London’s Royal Festival Hall, and folk and blues festivals worldwide. He can also be heard regularly as a guest on Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion. His recordings, The Secret Handshake and Password, feature his unusually crafted interpretations of classic, oftentimes obscure, American material, as well as his own unique compositions. His 2003 release, Private Astronomy, on the Deutsche Gramophone ‘classical’ label is a departure from his folk roots and instead features his unique arrangements for chamber ensemble of the obscure piano compositions of the great 1920’s jazz trumpeter Bix Beiderbecke. “Geoff Muldaur was and is one of my musical heroes,” writes Loudon Wainwright III
. “When I listen to him sing and play, I can hear the coal mine, the cotton field, and last, but certainly foremost, the boy’s boarding school.” Check him out on You Tube.

Through Roses has received worldwide acclaim in the 27 years since it was written. It has been performed hundreds of times throughout the world, and has been translated into 11 languages. It has not been performed in New York since its premiere 27 years ago, when the New York Times praised it as “an extraordinary achievement.”

Through Roses features the noted theater, film and television actor Saul Rubinek as violinist Carl Stern, tormented by his horrific memories of Auschwitz, where through the rose hedges of the camp commandant’s garden, he witnessed the arrival of his fellow prisoners of war, the selection process and their inevitable journey to the gas chambers. England’s Channel 4 and Germany’s WDR co-produced the Christopher Nupen documentary film of Through Roses. It won the prize for Best Music at the Besancon Festival in France and a Golden Bear at the New York Television Film Festival. A motion picture version was produced by Cinecentrum (Germany) and directed by Jergen Flimm, with Academy Award winners Meximilian Schell and Cinematographer David Watkin (Out of Africa).

Koch is releasing a new recording of Through Roses this November 2008. It was recorded in Santa Fe after a performance on August 24th at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Several of the musicians on the recording will be performing in New York. Should you be planning a trip to New York during mid-November, don’t miss this incredible performance!

Staff Profile:
Julie Rodriguez

Julie Rodriguez, Associate Artistic Administrator for the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, has been a member of the Festival staff for 12 years. In addition to her duties in the Artistic Administration Department, she is also Managing Editor of the yearly Program Book, and Marketing and PR Associate. When not working, Julie’s hobbies include attending concerts in other music genres, such as rock and local music. Originally from New York, Julie studied piano at The Juilliard School of Music. Full of energy and with a friendly smile always present, she is just one of the hardworking members of the Festival staff. SFCMF Newsletter sat down with Julie at the end of the 2008 season for a quick chat with her:

You’ve been with SFCMF for over 12 years. Where did you work prior to joining the Festival?
“Prior to joining the Festival, I held a variety of positions, all in the arts/advertising/communications fields, including running my own public relations company in New York.”

You also worked in theatre for a bit, didn’t you?
“Yes, for about a year and a half. I served as Yul Brenner’s personal assistant during the London Paladium production of ‘The King and I.’ It was a wonderful experience all the way around, from working closely with such a talented actor to living in London.”

How long have you lived in New Mexico?
“I’ve been a New Mexico resident for over 18 years. My husband, Rudy, and I live here in Santa Fe. It’s not only a great town for music and culture but it’s a great place to live as well!”

Who are some of your favorite composers that the Festival has commissioned over the years?
” Mark O’Connor’s String Quartet (Bluegrass); Roberto Sierra’s Concierto de Camara from this past season, and also Kaija Saariaho’s Serenatas.”

Did you have a favorite performance from the 2008 season?
“There were so many wonderful performances, but I’d have to say my favorite was the Dohnanyi Piano Quintet No. 2 on August 14th at the Lensic performed by violinists Daniel Phillips and Benny Kim, violist Steven Tenenbom, cellist Eric Kim and pianist Jon Nakamatsu.”

What three words would you use to describe the Festival?
“Three words! - I’ve had too many wonderful experiences with the Festival to describe it in only three words.”

Another opportunity to hear Chirgilchin
Chirgilchin were the runaway hit of ¡Globalquerque! 2006. Everyone was captivated by their otherworldly vocal techniques. Atmospheric and mesmeric, throat singing is almost too difficult to describe in words. It must be heard to be believed-the music, produced by resonating low sounds in the throat, creates a middle note and a haunting, flute-like harmonic. Chirgilchin (meaning “mirage” or “miracle”) is a group of musicians from Tuva, a small Russian province north of Western Mongolia. Singing the ancient folk songs in the Tuvan language, the group also plays hand made instruments. The ensemble has appeared in concert throughout the United States, Russia, Finland, Belgium, France, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, and Canada. Presented by AMP Concerts. Great Big Sea at the Historic El Rey
The St. John’s-based, Juno-nominated band Great Big Sea fuses Newfoundland traditional music with modern pop in a crowd-pleasing formula both heartfelt and vital. A pure force of nature, much like the ocean surge they take their name from, Great Big Sea’s blend of instruments like mandolin, bodhran, fiddle, and concertina, along with their vocal harmonies, revels in the melodies they create and the Newfoundland tunes they love. Their ninth studio album, Fortune’s Favour, sees them boldly embracing new sounds and new ideas, fearlessly pushing the boundaries of their own art and music. Joel Harrison’s Vox Americana at the Outpost
Guitarist, composer and vocalist, Joel Harrison’s music defies categorization. Equally at home writing songs or complex chamber music; playing modern jazz or bar blues, the Washington D.C. native, who now lives in New York City, graduated from Bard College in 1980 with a BA in composition and performance. Vox Americana is a 65-minute, multi- movement suite whose stylistic palette, while based in jazz aesthetics, ranges through classical, Appalachian, African, and Latin American retaining its own unique probing voice. Vox Americana addresses questions of American identity, and ranges in mood from dark and elegaic to explosive and affirmative. Accompanying the music is a text that was culled, in non-linear fashion, from asking hundreds of people the following questions: Who are you? What does it mean to be an American? Where is our country headed? Vox Americana features some of the most prominent members of the new generation of New York musicians - Joel Harrison, guitar & vocals; Dave Binney, saxophone; Heun Choi, cello; Chris Howes, violin; Daniel Kelly, piano; Jerome Harris, bass; and Jordan Perlson, drums.

They draw their repertoire from an area of Spain where Moroccans, Celts, Europeans and Africans have all left their mark, and from the rich rituals that celebrate all aspects of life with exquisite melodies and irrestible rhythms.

Beautiful Losers next Art in Film offering
Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation. In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture. Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.

YDI Mi Voz Auditions for Fall 2008 Session
Youth Development Inc.’s (YDI) Mi Voz program teaches above-the-line filmmaking skills to middle school age kids. This will be the fourth 16-week session for YDI Mi Voz. Each session has a theme: The Fall 2008 session’s theme is The Zia’s Heart and is about New Mexican art and artists. The Zia’s Heart is a series of short documentaries that will be produced, directed, shot, edited and delivered by a group of middle school age students in Albuquerque. Each short documentary will spotlight a different art form produced by a local artist. Students will shadow chosen artists in different fields and document their creativity, their craft, and how it ties in to identifying Albuquerque and New Mexico as unique in the arts scene. YDI Mi Voz is a safe and free after school program for middle school age young people where they learn all aspects of visual storytelling using digital video. The purposes of the program are: 1. It contributes to building a “native workforce” for New Mexico’s blossoming film industry, giving young people a head start in using industry standard tools and techniques. 2. The finished products will expose New Mexico’s art and artists to a broader audience, letting its audience know the value of what has become such a large part of our city and state identities. 3. By providing Mi Voz classes under the YDI banner, students and their families have access to the wide range of social services YDI provides. We are actively seeking out participants for this session. During the 16-week after school course, students will be taught producing, directing, shooting, and editing using top of the line digital video equipment. The course is free to participants, but interested students must audition first to gauge their interest and dedication. 14 students will be selected. Classes are taught by Marcos Baca and Brian Beeler, working professionals in the area of digital art and filmmaking. 4 youth instructors who have participated previously will be at every class to mentor new students, as well as guest lectures by UNM Cinematic Arts Professors and other independent producers.

THIS WEEK AT THE PUB & GRILL at the SFBC!

Everyone has a different way to celebrate the first day of Fall. Some practise old rituals for the equinox, plus perhaps its the new moon as well! SOme throw a perty. Others check the pumpkin patch: will there be enough time for those pumpkins to turn orange? A few dedicated souls will be volunteering for their candidate’s cause. Even more people will show up at Santa Fe Brewing Co Bar and grill…listen to why.

SARAH BORGES

& The BROKEN SINGLES
ROCK/COUNTRY/ROCKABILLY

Some folks make music because they want to — others do it because they have no choice. Sarah Borges clearly falls into the latter category, the kind of person whose DNA would read like a musical chart if you mapped it out on paper.

Diamonds in the Dark, Borges’ second album — and first for Sugar Hill — spells that out in lush detail, with every plaintive vocal twist and every rollicking guitar turn offering up proof that the Massachusetts native knows her way around American music’s roots (and has her own roots planted firmly in some mighty fertile soil). That terrain, like the landscape she and her band, The Broken Singles have traversed over the past few years, is plenty varied — taking in scenes as diverse as the roadhouse melancholy of “Belle of the Bar” to the unashamedly guileless romanticism of “The Day We Met.”

Ira Gordon at KBAC highly reccomends this band to everyone!

JOE BONAMASSA
Joe Bonamassa has just won the
Guitar Players Reader’s Choice Award
BEST BLUES GUITARIST for 2008,
for the second year in a row!!

WITH OPENING SET BY
THE RYAN McGARVEY BAND

Voted by Guitar Player readers as 2007’s Best Blues Guitarist, blues-rock guitar virtuoso, vocalist, and songwriter JOE BONAMASSA is set to release his seventh solo album, SLOE GIN, on August 21, 2007. Bonamassa’s fourth release, the disc re-teams him with producer Kevin Shirley (Joe Satriani, Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Leppelin), who produced 2006’s YOU & ME, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Blues Chart in June of last year.

SLOE GIN effortlessly ranges through heavy blues and acoustic numbers alike, a textured flow that Bonamassa says was in part inspired by Rod Stewart’s legendary 1969 debut solo LP. In the liner notes, Joe adds, “I sequenced the album as a throwback to the side A/side B set-up of vinyl records…listening to an album as a whole is a lost pastime. I wanted to bring that experience back around.”

Renowned for this fluid phrasing and post-modern fusion of traditional roots blues with rock and roll guts, Bonamassa began playing guitar at age four, and toured with blues icon B.B. King when he was twelve. Recently, Joe was named Best Blues Guitarist in Guitar Magazine’s 2007 Reader’s Choice Awards. He is also the youngest member of the Memphis, TN-based Blues Foundation’s Board of Directors, and a spokesperson for their respected Blues in the Schools Program.

PENA’S BIRTHDAY BASH!
L A J U N T A

WITH SPECIAL GUESTS

DJ EL MONO SUCIO - NATIVE FIRE with

ONE FOUNDATION BAND - MEZKLAH

La Junta began early 2004 with a sound combining various musical styles. Influenced by so many genres, including jazz, blues, rock, reggae, Latin and hip-hop music, every song is significantly different from the next. Attempting to blend each sound, La Junta believes they have found something very refreshing in an industry of cardboard cutouts. With their unique style as a backdrop, La Junta reflects what they observe in everyday life as well as represent who they and where they come from in a positive way. This is the beginning of “SouthwestFunkHop”.

Recently La Junta released a new full length, industry standard album entitled “What it is” (May 9th, 2008). “What it is” can be described as: a plethora of outspoken word driven by no need for unique musical critique. Various voluptuous vehicles transport by way of rock, reggae, Latin and hip-hop music…but the truth is that without it, we’re clueless. The constant energy of “What it is” keeps the listener interested by constantly introducing new flavors, emotions, and routes in which to explore while maintaining a great vibe all the way through. Overall, “What it is” is a powerful stepping stone for La Junta.
Though the album is an amazing fingerprint for La Junta, nothing compares to the energy, fun, and musicianship of a live La Junta show, fans often compare La Junta to groups such as Ozomatli, 311, O.A.R., Dave Mathews, and Sublime. Because of this La Juntas fan base continues to grow exponentially, based on a consistent incline of CD sales and attendance at live performances.

M E Z K L A HFROM LOS ANGELES

Mezklah embodies L.A.’s evolutionary and revolutionary musical and artistic expression. As performers, vocalist/songwriter/visual artist Angel Garcia and guitarist Greg Hernandez reveal a raw presence as well as a futuristic visual and musical vision. This vision is accompanied by Matias Pizarro on Drums/Electronics and percussions and Juan Carlos Ramirez on Standard/synth Bass and trumpet.

Angel paints tribal illustrations all over the bands bodies before every performance. “I think there’s a basic tribal nature that lives in our consciousness and is in our blood,” Explains Angel. “When I am body-painting, it is not just a calming, meditative process I go through before performing.

THE WARSAW

POLAND BROTHERS

KILLER PUNK-DUB-SKA Warsaw Poland Bros. have played everywhere, with everyone in most of North America and Hawaii, while releasing several nationally distributed cd’s fueled by their own indie start up label, Invisible Mass Records. Warsaw’s dedication to a hobby-job-lifestyle has been, and will continue to be the driving force to perform live, coast to coast, towns to cities, day after night, mixing and releasing albums along the way. With over 300 shows a year, multiple gigs a day and merely days off in between, they are true road dogs, not an understatement, as Warsaw has been voted one of Jam Base’s top 10 touring bands. The ever-changing cast of characters that travel with the group lends the band to effortlessly moving through a wide range of styles. Warsaw is the ultimate definition of the DIY attitude, taking everything in-house from booking to engineering and producing their music. The Brothers and their work-horse musicians have collaborated with people all over the world and recording in every setting imaginable, from a backstage green room to Warsaw 1 (Warsaw’s van). With a dedicated street team, fan base, and unmatchable live show and talent pool, Warsaw is a testament to an incredible DIY lifestyle. When Warsaw comes to town, you’ll be dancing, drinking, and partying with a zeal you never knew you had, so you might as well call in sick, because they’ll be coming around soon…

Kathryne Cyman’s show at Weyrich worth seeing
Kathryne Cyman follows a 400-year old Japanese tradition to create translucent porcelain plates, cups and bowls - bringing to the process wonderful glazes made from materials she gathers in the Sandia Mountains and the volcanos on the west mesa. Cyman is being honored by AABA as a Local Treasure and I had the opportunity to visit with her before the opening of the Weyrich show. It is obvious that she is not only a master of the art, but that it is truly a labor of love. She has studied with porcelain masters in Arita, Japan where the process was created more than 400 years ago when a large porcelain clay deposit was discovered near the town of Arita. That clay is now only available to Japanese masters but a porcelain clay body with similar properties has been developed in the US, providing material for students and professionals using the Arita method. Cyman was selected by her professor, Jim Srubek, and Manji Inoue (a National Living Treasure from Japan) to continue Srubek’s Arita program at UNM. This is the only such program that exists in the US. The gallery is open Tue-Fri from 10:30 to 5:30 and Saturdays 11- 5:30. You can also call for an appointment.

Daily Bread, the Lord’s Prayer, and Santa FE Brewing CO

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

This is like our daily bread, possibly with terrific sandwich fillings, or a burger (even the buns are delicious) and a good round of mead. Before I give you the rest of the details, and the secret to blowing gloom away for another year, let’s take a moment to pray for those affected by Hurricane Gustav.

AMERICANA - SINGER/SONGWRITER

The Gougers used to have a big, fancy bio. It cost $200 and had big words like “analogous” and “suffused” in it. It also had “sidehill.” They decided that was lame and so they deleted it.

One day at Zapato’s Cantina in College Station, TX, Shane heard Jamie sing and asked her to come play in a band with him. She said “yes” and so they went back to Shane’s house and listened to some records. They jammed out to Gram and Emmylou one day. Then Gillian and Dave the next. They tried to pretty much copy what they heard because it made them feel like highlanders feel when they are near other immortals.

One day they hired this kid, Brian, to play fiddle. He played fiddle as good as Jamie sang and as good as Shane quoted dead philosophers. But he turned out to be a lame quitter and went to the Jug Band to make more money and get more women. He was immature.

So then they met Cody. They hired him because his dad played in the NFL and they thought that was cool. Later he taught Shane about Rock n Roll. He said, “The best bands don’t ever get signed.”

Then Shane’s mom co-signed and they bought a van. They met the Dedringers who drew nasty pictures in the dirt on the side of it. But Wrecks liked them so they were allowed to stay. They were good, too, and it was funny to watch Jonny gurm Townes’s son. And their girl jeans were hilarious!

One day the invisible gouger said that they needed a drummer. He told them that if they put the feathers of a Mexican fighting rooster in a Crown Royal bag and buried it while saying some shit in Spanish, then a drummer would appear in three business days. And that’s how they got Silva. They solidified the closing of the circle with a tattoo ceremony about heartache and the loss of god. That woulda been it. But Lance shows up and says, “You’re doing this all wrong.” The rest has been a work in progress. And so, kids, this is the story of the Gougers. We ooze positivity. www.thegougers.com

THE SOUTH AUSTIN JUG BAND

Let’s just get it out of the way right now: There’s no jug-playing in the South Austin Jug Band. And the bluegrass connotation that name carries should be spilled down the drain along with any other moonshine-preconceived notions. Sure, there’s fiddle, mandolin, an upright bass … but there’s also drumming, occasional electric guitar and even digital looping. And Beck. The band’s latest album, Strange Invitation, gets its title from a lyric in Mr. Hansen’s 1997 charmer, “Jackass,” the only cover on this 11-song collection.
Comparisons, if they must be made, might meander more toward a low-intensity Grateful Dead (which, it should be noted, started out as a real jug band) or something with an even more melodic and laid-back vibe. Lead singer/acoustic guitarist James Hyland, whose tenor redefines mellow, would be quite happy if you’d just go with “bitchin’ tunes.” www.southaustinjugband.com

GREEN MOUNTAIN GRASS
Live acoustic gonzograss from Austin, TX! Eclectic melodies, creative harmonies, explosive jams, and a thoroghly danceable experience. The four band members in GREEN MOUNTAIN GRASS are Dave Wilmoth (29, mandolin), Adam “Pickles” Moss (24, fiddle), Trevor Smith (18, banjo/guitar), and Jesse Dalton (25, upright bass). Together, they are exploring the sounds of traditional bluegrass, gypsy swing, folk, funk, reggae, and jazz to discover their own genre-bending sound. While some listeners haven taken to calling this sound “gonzograss,” the end result is described by the band as “melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic mastery with elements of sarcasm, quotes, humor, and exaggeration.”
Whether they are in front of an attentive listening-room audience, on a tall stage playing to a throng of sun-baked festival-goers, or in a local venue orchestrating a gonzograss dance party for their fans, something exciting and inspiring is always being created. www.myspce.com/greengrassplayers

Green Globe Festival

At the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Park
We are a sponsor of this year’s Green Globe Festival and will be pouring beer all day! Get your earth conscious buzz on.

The Green Globe Festival is not just the name of a party. It is a way of thinking, changing, living. The entire planet is feeling the pains of resource shortage and climate change. This is not only going to continue, it is going to get worse. Sustainable living is working with the planet to insure our ability to survive. Alternative energy, water conservation, sustainable agriculture, no matter the facet of our lives, there is a sustainable solution for almost all of our needs. The Green Globe Festival is the coming together of our community to educate ourselves on how we can all contribute to our future. Professionals and educators from across the state will be speaking and presenting information on how we can all help our community survive.

The Green Globe Festival is not just a multi-subject seminar. It is one heck of a party! It is the coming together of local and national acts in support of the move to sustainability. This year we have nine bands and a Hula troop, that’s right all, guys and girls in grass skirts! Gates are to open at 9 am and speakers will begin at 10am. Music performances will begin at 12pm and run till 10 pm with speakers featured between select performance sets throughout the afternoon. So come on out with the family and learn how you can help our community and have a great time doing it.

Dr. James Biggs has been involved in a wide-range of local and regional wildlife science and management projects in New Mexico. Much of his current research pertains to the distribution, movement patterns, and habitat use patterns of large herbivores.
