Samantha Giron Dance Project in Town for One Night Only

Samantha Giron Dance Project will be presenting work from two distinct shows: a premiere entitled “Quickly Going Somewhere and Back,” and two excerpts from “Women and War,” called “Fire Diary” and “Interrogations.”

“Women and War” seeks to explore the human experience of war from different perspectives than those typically presented to us. The representation of war in our culture is usually focused on men; men play the centrally-depicted, heroic roles of killing, being killed, being captured and tortured. Physical bravery is shown as a male trait.

“Quickly Going Somewhere and Back” is a new kind of project for Samantha Giron Dance Project. Usually Giron approaches Christianson once she has a clear idea for a dance piece, and he composes new work that best fits her ideas for the project. However, when Christianson and Giron were invited to perform at San Francisco’s COLLABORATION Festival, they set out to truly co-create a dance and music performance. This time, Christianson wrote the score first and provided Giron with some imagery and narrative context. Giron then set to work responding to the score. Since then, the two have continued to adapt their own contributions to the performance. Christianson performs his original violin score on stage in “Quickly Going Somewhere and Back,” and even performs some of the choreography alongside dancer LeTania Kirkland!

For more information, visit the Santa Fe Complex web site. Samantha GIron Dance Project’s web site is here.

Santa Fe Complex is a nonprofit, community studio creating connections in science, technology and art. Our studio stands on three core activities:

Collaboration to address real-world problems, encourage cooperation and create economic opportunities in applied complexity, urban planning and simulation, and computational arts.

Communication with local, national and international communities about our work in Santa Fe and elsewhere. Whether it’s a live feed or published reports, we broadcast our work - and the role Santa Fe plays in this important effort - to all interested parties.

Education through the principle of learning-by-doing in active projects that lets students be part of, and contribute to, their project team. We offer formal classes, scientific and technology lectures, and internships.

NM Short Film wins Best of Show in Utah
Things We Do For Love won the Best of Show Grand Jury prize as well as Audience Favorite awards at the 2008 Fear No Film Festival in Salt Lake City. The short film was written and directed by NM filmmaker Don Gray and was shot in conjunction with the NM Film Technician Training Program at Northern New Mexico Community College in El Rito. It is about how far one family is willing to go to show their love for one another. Set in a small town in Northern New Mexico - coffins, fresh graves and a parade of odd funerals provide the backdrop for the story. The film was shot over five days in El Rito, Ojo Caliente and Abiquiu.

Watch a classic film under the stars. Popcorn, beverages and more will be available. Some seating is available but blankets and chairs may be brought for your comfort. Located in the West Palace Arts District in the heart of Old Santa Fe, LewAllen Contemporary has a long history of representing the best in contemporary art. With 10,000 square feet of exhibition space, it is one of the largest galleries in the Southwest, representing internationally known and emerging artists in painting, sculpture, photography, prints, ceramic, jewelry, tapestry, and glass. On exhibit now Joe Ramiro Garcia: Karaoke. Compounds of personal and collective experience, the familiar and the surreal.

We thank LewAllen Contemporary for their support and commitment to bringing wonderful music to Santa Fe.

You have your concert tickets, now what about the other Festival events?

You’ve made your concert selections (all of them, right!), and you have your tickets. Don’t forget to add to your calendar some of the other events the Festival offers in addition to its season concert programs: free and open rehearsals, the chance to observe a master class, a free Indian Market concert and a program entitled “Creative Dialogue.”

A wonderful way to see a piece come together before the performance and to see your favorite performers in a more casual atmosphere, the Festival’s rehearsals are free and open to the public. Schedules and locations are available during the season on the Festival’s website, www.santafechambermusic.com, and at the Festival’s two Santa Fe halls – the St. Francis Auditorium at the New Mexico Museum of Art, and The Lensic Performing Arts Center. You can call for the open rehearsal schedule at (505) 983-2075, when prompted press 6.

This season’s master class, free and open to the public, takes place on Friday, August 22 from 10:00 -11:30 am at St. Francis. This event presents a unique opportunity to observe the sharing of knowledge, advice and love of music from one of the world’s renowned chamber musicians, Daniel Phillips of the Orion String Quartet, to one of the country’s up and coming star chamber music ensembles, the Escher String Quartet, as well as hear some great music making.

“Creative Dialogue” to be held on Friday, August 8th at 6:00 pm at St. Francis Auditorium, is a unique program that the Festival is presenting in cooperation with the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki. Finnish and American composers, and performance students, will perform music for the composer’s workshop with composer Kaija Saariaho and cellist Anssi Karttunen.

The Festival salutes the city’s annual Indian Market Concert, with a free concert held on August 22 at 7:00 pm at St. Francis Auditorium. The Escher String Quartet will perform two works by Debussy: String Quartet in g, No. 10, and String Quartet No. 12 in F, Op. 96 “American.”

Artist Profile: The Escher String Quartet

The Escher String Quartet (Adam Barnett-Hart, violin; Wu Jie, violin; Pierre Lapointe, viola and Andrew Janss, cello) takes its name from Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher; inspired by Escher’s method of interplay between individual components working together to form a whole.

Formed in 2005, the group has established a reputation as a world-class string quartet. San Francisco Classical Voice praised the group, “Though they’ve only been playing together for two years, these performers have achieved the most unified sound that I’ve ever heard from a string quartet. It’s a cool, emotionally restrained sound that impresses through its sheer precision and clarity.” The New York Times stated, “The individual and sometimes concerto-like playing of the four musicians was notable for its polish and tonal beauty.” This past September, the Escher began its Chamber Music Society Two Residency with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The ensemble is also Caramoor’s Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence.

The Escher String Quartet has attracted the attention of several esteemed artists who immediately admired the young ensemble’s individual sound, inspired artistic decisions and unique cohesiveness. Within months of its inception, the Escher was invited by both Pinchas Zukerman and Itzhak Perlman to be the quartet-in-residence at each artist’s summer festival: The Young Artists Programme at Canada’s National Arts Centre and The Perlman Chamber Music Program on Shelter Island, NY. The following winter, the Escher Quartet made its Washington, DC debut, representing the Manhattan School of Music for the Kennedy Center’s Conservatory Project. The ensemble has appeared at a number of venues, including Boston’s Gardner Museum, Ravinia, Music @Menlo, New York’s 92nd St. Y and at the University of Idaho, among others. The Quartet is also on the faculty of Stony Brook University as Visiting Artist-in-Residence in a unique relationship with the world-renowned Emerson String Quartet.

The ensemble can be heard in numerous performances during the fifth and sixth weeks of the Festival’s 2008 season, and will perform such works as Debussy’s String Quartet in g, Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 12 in F, Mozart’s String Quartet No. 14 in G and Bartok’s String Quartet No. 5 in A, as well as works by Vivaldi and Bach. They will also have a master class with Daniel Phillips of the Orion String Quartet on Friday, August 22nd that is free and open to the public.

The BOULDER
ACOUSTIC SOCIETY

Each member of BAS comes from a different musical world, and the resulting mix is what makes their music so special. Shredding guitar licks, soaring gypsy violin, a little ukulele and the thump of an old time bass bounce around with a jazz accordion and creative percussion to create a new sound. It is American Roots music with the edge of punk rock and the grace of chamber music.
RANDOM FAMILY STRING BAND

RFSB is a high energy, original newgrass band from Taos, New Mexico. Their well-crafted, smart songwriting combined with their individual styles of play has made them a favorite in northern New Mexico. Up-tempo beats and exquisite vocals drive the audience to the dance floor. RFSB’s original songs blend the contemporary with bluegrass, folk, and instrumental improvisation. Equally at home in the Jam Band and Bluegrass scene, these boys love to pick. RFSB has shared the stage with the Boulder Acoustic Society, Elephant Revival, Last to Know, and the Brent Berry Band. Inspired by Yonder Mountain String Band, Neil Young, Grateful Dead, and Old and in the Way, the Random Family keeps you dancing!

Pleasure Pilots, Memphis P’Tails,
and Chris Dracup
Saturday, July 19, 7:00-10:00 pm
Albuquerque Museum Amphitheater
2000 Mountain Road NW, Old Town Albuquerque

Pleasure Pilots, Memphis P’Tails, and Chris Dracup –
Saturday, July 19, 7:00-10:00 pm:
The Pleasure Pilots is a popular New Mexico-based dance band playing rocking vintage rhythm and blues, swing and jump music. Instrumentation includes: guitar, piano and Hammond B3, drums, bass, tenor and baritone saxophones. The band specializes in recreating the roots of rhythm and blues. The Pilots won the Junior League of Albuquerque’s “Barttle of the Blues Bands” on October 13, 2007. Conceptually, the band draws much of its material from vintage rhythm and blues artists popular in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. (Louis Jordan, Jackie Brenston, Amos Milburn, T-bone Walker, Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Albert King, among others). The primary focus of the music, however, is DANCE!

Led by Albuquerque blues guitar virtuoso Darin Goldstone, The Memphis P’Tails are a powerful Blues experience, drawing energy and raw power from the fathers of the genre, while staying true to their own Southwest heritage. The band’s inspiration came from Muddy Waters, B. B. King, Magic Sam, Otis Rush, Albert King, Freddie King, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and many other guitar-wielding bluesmen who helped shape the distinctive sound. The desert and the mountains did the rest. The result is explosive and in your face, like blues distilled to its purest, finest essence, and served up in a shot glass. Real Blues, straight, no chase, Blues white lightning.

New Mexico blues man Chris Dracup, will deliver a heaping amount of soulful blues guitar and solo vocals.

Admission: $12 Adults; $10 Seniors (60+) and Students w/ID; $9 New Mexico Jazz Workshop (NMJW) and Albuquerque Museum Members.

For event & ticket info, call 255-9798

Summer means FUN! Come to Santa Fe, or Albuquerque NM to get a taste of the Southwest

Monday, June 16th, 2008

It’s a very hot night here in the office. However the outside night air is cool and windy. After a long day working, I had to go over and pull weeds at one of my PT gigs. Just before sunset, a cool wind arrived, making one believe in the chance of rain. The wind grew in force and clouds soon zoomed of around the mountain. I did enjoy the moon rise to my left, and the sunset to my right. I also love working with the land albiet a commerical zone location. The cool evening air helped a lot too.

Aching a bit, I returned home, stood and stred at another mess of weeds, all my own. So I did some more work, a relatively small section and watched the moon through drifting clouds, and a tall tree. Both my cats came out to visit, and once my black cat, Jasper, sitting on the stairs railing, was caught gazing at the nearly full moon. I never witnessed her do that before.

Ain’t got no show….painting by MAry MacIntyre

Before I share news and there wil be more tomorrow, I apologize for now getting the Saturday night events to you earlier. Many of these shows will be continuing, and a few definitely seem worth seeing.

Also in Santa Fe there is a new play called “little Ghost” at the CCA on Old PEcos trail. It is a locally produced and written work with some strong perspectives on…read the Paseotempo for a longer story, but better yet, be bold and just go see it.

Also had a long talk with my mother tonight. Heard stories about my Dad’s last years. SOme change now years long past. What touched me most was how my 89 yr old Mom’s voice changed and softened as she shared her memories. Her long and longing for him freely lingered across the lines. These were sounds seldom heard during his time here, yet encapsuled deep feelings she not to express to me then. This Father’s day, let your emotions flow as much as Dad can take. One never knows when he won’t be near to see your loving eyes or hear them. Happy Father’s Day to all Dads!

I did a coupple of hours of garden work again tonight, and then watering as well. Seeds have become seedlilngs, my mints are growing, lots of stuff are blooming. Found a narcissus a lte bloomer, and I may even have hollyhocks that bloom this year.

Ever notice that we now have instant gardens. I do need to get seeds, but most of the annuals are purchased blooming. In the old days there was a lot more patience and care to get seedlings strong and healthy.

Here’s some news.

ReRun: Los Mayas and Cuban Street music

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Lost part of a previous post so here goes again….Los Mayos Restaurant, www.losmayasrestaurante.com, Yum Serving Northern New Mexican & Traditional Mexican Yum
santa fe style cuisine

I had to double check the Los Mayas website, because the menu was significantly different than a few years ago. Originally the restaurant had more Caribean and Guatamalen food. We arrived at the Restaurant at about 7Pm with our 2 for 1 coupon. The coupon was great as it was useable 7 days a week. At first Pat was concerned about the menu being pricey, but I reminded her that we would have plenty of food, chips and salsa were included, and we had our coupon. It was one of the recent events where we actually stayed in our old dinner average. Simply put: we had 2 meals with plenty of leftovers for $9 each plus tip. Service was good, and the food excellent.

We also received great service, when we arrived. There was a long line, and we nearly walked away when I suggested we check how long the wait would be. A waitress looked around and saw a couple of tables for 2 available and we were seated in about 5 minutes. The restaurant and patio were packed and very busy: this is Memorial Day Weekend, Sunday evening. Since we were both hungry: excellente!

Everything changed when Victor Alvarez and his trio got up to play. We were on the “patio” which has a roof and is enclosed by a coyote fence. The cool evening air felt refreshing, yet there were no street distractions thanks to an adobe wall streetside. Pat’s face relaxed when she realized that we were going to have music. I said to her, so where can we get all thisand have a coupon. She agreed.

Victor Alvarez had a trio tonight. A bongo and other similar drums and the drummer set a rhytum and a handsome bassist outlined a most exquiste bass. Victor was the entertainer and plays a dlectable Mandolin. He did the singing, the talking and loved to make the ladies smile. “Thank you, Thank you, You have such good taste”, he’d say after a round of significant. Diners droped their forks nearly in unison to be able to applaud.

I particularly enjoyed the complex and quick fingering that produced multiple melodies and changes with fluid ease. I stopped eating and talking just to watch the fingers create webs fast than a master spider could. All this on a Mandolin: impressive. Very festive and light. Al this embellished by his suave Latin character.

Still lost a large part of that post. Perhaps tomorrow, I’ll reconstruct. My apologies… you can always go to www.savormusic.com or t he previous blog for additional information.

Savor Music: Victor Alvarez and his trio

Let’s dance and learn more about Savor Cuban Street MUsic ala Santa Fe NM. It must be a busy night as the computer is on slow crank. I am fading fast and have to get up early. I wanted to add more information from the Savor Music site as I was delightfully impressed by the famous Victor Alvarez. It’s good to actually hear someone before you learn that they are relatively famous. I got the notion that he was an exceptional musician from listening to him. (read previous post). So it was easy to go up to him during break and ask for his card. He responded graciously, and his site is full of information. Some is listed below. www.savormusic.com

Savor music includes several additional notable musicians too. Go the site for information. I included the three that I heard Sunday evening at Los Mayas. (See schedule information on previous blog or on their site.) These guys also are impressive by the schedule they keep. Many musicians complain about the difficulty of finding steady work in Santa Fe. Look at their schedule: they are busy!

VICTOR ALVAREZ:Cuban born award-winning mandolinist and guitarist, Victor has traveled the world with his salsa orchestra The LA Express. He has recorded under the labels of AAPA and North to South. Victor sings and plays mandolin as a Cuban laud and also plays gui
