EWASTE: We pay to remove our trash, don’t we?

Organize: Photo by Mary MacIntyre

My world has been pretty full lately, and in my hustle I often neglect concerns that can be pressing on the earth. As I finally received enough money to deal with my computer needs, I went to my favorite computer store: Santa Fe Computer Works, on Parkway Av in Santa FE NM, 87507. It’s off Rufina. If you are new in town, this defiintely the place to go for more service at a reasonable cost than just about anywhere. I had in mind buying a new faster…computer. The owner Steve checked on the computers I had, asked me to bring them in, and showed me that for my present needs, a simple upgrade was all I needed. That was great as I got to purchase a re-conditioned laptop and a new LCD monitor. He sells new computers too, and has a longer warranty than most vendors on his products. The warranty and knowing that he’ll do the service in house matters a lot to me.

I heard him take a call and discovered that he is “loaning” the local Obama for America campaign a lot of computers, printers, cables, and basically whatever they need to operate more efficiently. He works with several non-profits as well. I am proud how he and many smaller businesses do their best to really support local projects. When I asked if I could have permission to blog about this he said, “Sure. However I have something else that really important to me. EWASTE.”
What followed was a long story of countries and companies complicit in a nightmarish tale. The drama is enough to make one sick.

I’ll try to keep this short. Awhile back, Steve took a consulting job with the US Post Office. They wanted to recycle their old scanners. As a good detective would do, he researched the normal story about EWASTE. What he learned was rather disappointing. Most of our waste is sold to companies in China. Many companies that claim to be earth friendly make more money and incur less expenses by selling to the Chinese. “Duh”, you may say, “so what else is new Mary? It’s a global economy right?”
When I go to recycle or do good for the earth, I seek a truely earth friendly venue.

Go visit a Chinese processing plant, and according to Steve, you’ll find children smashing monitors with sledge hammers. Children. Inside you monitor is a lead coating to reduce the radiation from the monitior to protect us. When the kids crash that monitor the lead is airborn. These children work long days, everyday, with thousands of monitors. They work in the dust. They breathe the dust. Look up the effects of lead poisioning. This is only one part of the story.

Steve did further research, and discovered that there are a few businesses in the United States that have safer technologies to reclaim the parts that can be recycable without posioning their workers. It costs more. They are monitiored and have earned the highest DOD and EPA clearances and licenses. The US Post Office went for the American companies. Encourage your community to learn about this.

In the meantime, Steve had to consider his own business. He also is concerned about educating others about these issues. First, he has created a local, at his business, recycling project. Remember this costs money. TO recycle a computer is $15, a monitor $6. Please verify the prices to make sure I am accurate. His customers often complain about the prices. I would have at first thought twice about it. However, he said he explained it to one guy this way,” You have your trash picked up, don’t you?” “Yes”, “The city charges you for trash pick-up don’t they?” “Yeah”. “Your electronics are your trash aren’t they?” “Yes.” So-o-o. It is better to become responsible citizens. It is necessary that we support our earth. Don’t forget those children.

Then I asked Steve, “What about the City of Santa Fe, the State of New Mexico?” He told me about research he has done and guess what? Some entities feel that they can pass on their guilt, responsibility, etc. to the next guy, and somehow become innocent. Sounds familiar, give our toxic waste to a management company and don’t pay attention to where they dispose of it. Hmmm, they dump it in landfills, rivers, on the side of the road….ever heard this song before. Guess what most of our EWASTE still goes to China. Picture those children again. They are just like the poor kids in our cities who are exposed to lots of toxic waste daily. They are like the Native Americans exposed to waste from uranium mining.

If anyone has time and energy, and perhaps a little political savvy to take on our local issues, join in. I’ll ask Steve for notes and names and addresses. Please contact me here. Work locally and change the world. These matters are our responsibility. If you are in Santa Fe, bring your stuff to Santa Fe Computer Works. If you have truckloads, bring friends to help sort parts safely. Call first for lots of stuff. You could also create a fund to help pay for workers, or pay fees to those who don’t have much $$$. Tell him I sent you. Reuse when possible. My computers may last me another 2-3 years!

In the meantime: organize.

Orlando Leibovitz: Painter plus innovative media

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Ever wanted to make your painting sing? How can a computer merge music and and image? recently I had the good fortune to meet with Mr. Orlando Leibovitz in his Santa Fe studio. Although many paintings filled his house, in his studio we went directly to his computer. Within minutes he was providing me with the history of these most recent inventions and how he created a musical symbolic “language and then by working with a composer created compositions that corealted to his musical paintings. The process and compilation combines a multi-layered complexity. Afterall any image on a computer often proves challenging. Adding original sounds casts new dimensions to the work.

The best way to understand the above introduction is to visit his site: www.orlandoleibovitz.com

You won’t see a lot of words, but do eeeenlarge the painitings, and of course listen to them too.

From his site:

About the Musical Language

The objects in this series are simultaneously paintings and musical manuscripts. The shapes and colors comprise a rudimentary musical language.

There are three different symbols in each painting. Each symbol is a musical note. The shape designates a different volume. The size of the symbol indicates a whole, half, quarter, or eighth note. The color designates pitch. The melody in each painting is composed by chance. A role of the dice or a turn of a card determines the music. Paul William Simons provided additional harmony and performed the work.

All paintings are acrylic on canvas or linen. The sizes range from 40” by 30” to 60” by 96”.

And then there are earlier masterpieces:

About the Accordion Keyboards

These paintings combine color and music, sound, and light. The accordion series includes twelve paintings, each a different color on the color wheel. When displayed together in appropriate sequence, the paintings constitute a color map.

You see, the site has few words. They don’t convey the beauty, inspiration, and creative thinking that dynamically voices the artist’s vision via the image. Please go visit his site.

Kathleen Edwards interview and music via youtube

Monday, May 5th, 2008

“I want to rock, and convey…”listen to the video it is fantastic! Young, intense, genuine, rather good too.

More music on: kathleenedwards.com
kathleenedwards.com/blog

good morning. Another bumpy ride through the night on America’s highways. It’s 8:30am, I’m wide awake, but one step shy of happiness without my morning coffee yet. I woke to find my mind racing about all the things I’ve neglected and the blog seemed like the easiest to attend to, as it involved not moving. The last 6 weeks have been busy and full of wonderful and strange things. The earliest memory I have is at the Black Sheep Inn where it all started. My friends Jeff, Leigh, and Mark bought and run a great spot down the road from the Sheep, and it was there that I realized my Dad and Jim look similar, but more importantly, I finally found the world’s best dill pickle. I’m not joking. Here it is.

Ok Kathleen Edwards is from Ottawa Canada, which may provide a clue to her depth and offbeat lyrics inviting you to go trans-thought into the 21st first century contemporary insightful rock. She isn’t afraid to sing what she thinks, and the band rocks across generations. Hey I am 56 and can immediately feel gladly this is real rock n roll and new strong lyrics…fast forward to the 20-30 somethings and the mood and lyrics make sense today. Experience the band, the music is trippy, and then suddenly forthright and direct. A harmonica spins some real old whacky slow moving blues into almost a dreamy country. While you are reading this go to her site: www.kathleenedwards.com
and listen. The second cut is more classic rock urban flair and moving. This is straaightforward strong woman with no fine prissy frills: direct and amazing. IF nothing elese you’ll be dancing and perhaps, how bold of you to sing along.

“a walking declaration of everything I couldn’t get right” lyrics by K.E…..cut three. Relationships and clearsighted identiy gets all mixed up…”asking for flowers” K.E. …more than romance: feelings that sting most of us occasssionally and when they do these feelings may run deep leaving a few jagged edges bleeding for awhile. Yet you need to touch another again and still though you understand it may never be safe, you will get up either to scream or perhaps to dance again.

In case you love the round about travel of fast footing poetry: you’ll love her lyrics. Not your old fashioned country rock…don’t miss this CD or better yet show up and see her live at the SFBC pub and grill. Have a brew, and be bold, get up and dance again. “you get the glory…” K.E. lyrics. Keep listening: you’ll be surprised where she’ll go next!

Govenor Bill Richardson has grown a beard! What do you do after the PRIMARIES?

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Govenor Bill Richardson came home to NM and went right to work with the Legislature. I haven’t kept up with all the details but these guys and a few gals keep themselves extremely busy and have more work than they can be expected to complete in 30 days.

I saw a video interviewing the Govenor after the superbowl. He met up with Bill Clinton there. Govenor Richardson isn’t about to endorse anyone yet. However he has grown a beard. Looks a bit like a bandito, perhaps he just needs to catch himself for awhile after all the hard fast paced work he’s been up to. The interview is not easily found on You Tube yet.

This is what is called a slow news day. A co-worker came to me at work tonight to point out that I had been quote in The New Mexican with my exit polls comments. AH only if he had asked me for my url…hmmmm….

He’s been in NM for 30 years and playing how long? Along the way he has started these music festivals both in Taos and Austin Tx. Need a break from wherever? Got some time saved up for a Spring Break. Austin might be somewhat warmer and the excitement is building, there will b e 50 stages around town and how many bands can keep a city spinning per day? Musicians flocl from all over far beyond the SW to gather like a mixed flocks of birds ready to sturt their stuff and dance, sing, congregate and let the world know that music carries the

Bridging the Past to the Present: SXSW a lot more than dreams

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Yes this is a blog about SXSW. I just like Cathryn McGill too and her opeing words to this video expresses what I wanted to say, just differently. The ability to hold a vision and manifesting dreams of musicians…however I am getting ahead of myself.

Once upon a time and still today, there was a band who called themselves: SXSW. They love southwestern music and much more and this band is creating a legacy that reaches far beyond themselves. Let’s start with a little history, this will be a four or 5 part review. Please take time to visit each blog. SXSW

These look like old videos but I don’t really know. It sets the mood, and the simple part of the story, is long, long, ago this dude Michael Hearne set to playing the “gee-tar” just cause he loved playing and singing.

Michael also mentions Bonnie Hearne, who also is real famous in these parts. She can’t perform anymore but her husband Bill still does.

I thought I’d find more videos focusing on the whole band but when you youtube search by the band name you get the festival, so I’ll divert just a little and tell more of this story AHA! I remembered the SFBC’s writeup from the previous blog about their upcoming performance here in Santa Fe (SXSW BAND) so I did a quick copy:Michael Hearne’s incredibly smooth voice and amazing acoustic guitar style combined with Carmen Acciaioli’s musical mastery of the steel guitar, fiddle, mandolin, dobro, and hammered dulcimer, with the extremely talented Zeke Severenson on stand up and electric bass and you have what people all over the Southwest and beyond call their favorite band. If we are missing anyone my apologies. I know Shake Russell sometimes plays too, and if Bill Hearne is in the audience almost every band will call him up to sing…you get the drift: a lot of fellas and a few gals may show up and play together cause it just sounds so good!

Back to the diversion:

Michael Hearne again: Hey look what I found, some shots of the band!

I’ll make a plug here, you know these guys all make records(CDS) too! Buy some. Also there are podcasts that if you go to SXSW.com you can listen to; plus some films. Also never forget you can press the menu buttons on these videos and listen to even more music.

Listen to LOCAL RADIO for Great Programs and news

Friday, January 25th, 2008

img_4812.JPG

For WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT GO TO NEXT BLOG (BELOW)

Airwaves: Still can’t see them but we can hear their glorious results as clearly as we can hear the howling wind in a storm, or waves crashing on the shore, or the quiet rustling of lake meeting shoreline on a spring morn. Radio has been over commercialized, and may not be as BIG as it used to be, but in NM where we still have local programming (on some stations) and creative in depth coverage on a few more, radio is a quick way to get entertainment fast all day long.

If you were to read my sidebar, listing some of my keywords, you’d discover many of the topics you can get quickly on RADIO! Of course there is more. The best part that I enjoy about some of our local stations is learning about topics, musicians, news that I would otherwise not find the time for. Especially the BBC news which reminds me there’s a large world out there that I may not think about.

In Santa Fe, radio is so hot that it can raise over $150000 in less than 2 weeks for operating costs. Wish I could do that.

Don’t Blink….trust me friend, a 100 years goes faster than you think.

From youtube, and I found it playing on Country Music Herald. Heather S did a good job here. Sometimes we need to b e reminded how important each day is, even the ones where you don’t do as much as you think you should, or when you ignore those around you.
Life certainly doesn’t appear to be perfect, and us humans often neglect those closest to us.

However, we can as quickly, connect both pyschically or by phone and move into our heart space where we feel the love and let someone know how grateful we are that they are on the planet. Mind you I understand with many families this might prove difficult. For these circumstances simply acknowledging your gratefulness and…(fill in the blank) can clear the air for you and you can send out love. Often it’s fun to watch the world improve when that energy abounds.

Believe me already I am in my 50’s and I’m astounded how much I haven’t done, and where the time has flown. Good thing I have longevity on my side! One thing I am glad of is that when I helped raise some friends children, that I took time often to be with them. We share deep memories and connections. Appreciate the younguns while you can. They grow up real fast now-a-days.

Remember to visit when you can, Country Music Herald, and let Heather know I sent you her way.

Happiness Setpoint? (and yeah Richardson dropped out)

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

img_2879ab.jpg

img_2960a.jpg

Here’s just a quick fun update and I may return soon with other interviews. I heard Marci talk on the radio a few days ago about happiness. The interview on ksfr.org with Diego Mulligan had some more depth and hit on more topics. See if you can find his podcast there. However,
this interview is available now here and you may find some good points. One of her sumary points is: if you are going to set a new years resolution: set an intention for happiness…oe increasing the happiness setpoint. Why? Happiness for no good reason has multiple positive side effects. Listen to learn more.

from the email:

Mary,

As promised the other day, I’m very excited to let you
know that I’ve posted an interview with Marci Shimoff
that I’d love for you to hear.

http://www.wealthbeyondreason.com/marci.html

Of course Marci was in “The Secret” (assuming you’ve
seen that) and is best known for being the catalyst
behind the “Chicken Soup for the Woman’s Soul” book,
as well as many others.

Her new book is “Happy for No Reason.” As I write this,
she’s just a few hours away from being on the Today Show!

But where they’ll only give her about 6 minutes,
I gave her 25 minutes to share some of her insight
into happiness and more specifically
how happiness relates directly to the Law of Attraction.

There was a time when a topic like “happiness” would
have probably not inspired me to invest my time into
listening to an interview on the subject…but this is
WAY different than what you probably expect.

There is an entire physiological SCIENCE around happiness
and Marci has researched this more deeply than anyone I’ve
ever met, and I’ve learned a lot from reading the book.

I know you’re going to learn something from the interview,
so I invite you to go give it a listen.

Her book is released today and she has an amazing promotion
going on, part of which is over $3000.00 worth of products
that will be yours if you purchase the book during the
promotional period. One of those items is an enhanced
version of our Wealth Beyond Reason Starter Pack.

If you’re not familiar with Marci, I know you’ll enjoy
meeting her through this interview:

http://www.wealthbeyondreason.com/marci.html

To your happiness!

Spent under $10.00 on Black Friday! Pay and enjoy the FILM Festival.

Go to the movies! It’s the Santa Fe Film festival this week: the 28th to 12/2. Some of you can afford it, come fly to Santa Fe. Check if the winter lower rates have started. If not, check the Bed and Breakfast or small cozy hotels for comfort that surpasses the big chains.

Five Graces is almost like renting a first story condo. La Posada will be expensive but has a restaurant and SPA. Rio Chama a famous exquisite dining experience whre the chef knows how to really cook lotsa MEATs. Big portions. Get breakfast down the street at Guadulpe Cafe.

The movies will be located all over town so you will need a car rental. There should be plenty available. Bring WARM WINTER CLOTHES: it’s already snowed the the temps have been in the 30’s the last several days.

If you surf, you’ll find great deals with breakfast included: example there’s a small inn near the Espiscapal Church on Palace across the street from La Posada Inn. See if you can google that! Anyway, it’s a simple accomodation with a dining room. Small, quaint, close to the Plaza. They bake their own muffins and have a large healthy selection for breakfast/brunch.

The film festival is fun, however people around these parts are being challenged by prospects of oil drilling in Santa Fe County, near a large and needed water basin.

http://www.thesun-news.com/Nov11Issue.pdf www.thesun-news.com

I had intended to copy part of an article in the Sun News which is now on the stands but not online yet regarding the proposed drilling in Galisteo. The article is called Progress? by Cyril Christo. This is a pretty political newspaper with affordable advertising. Subtitles for the Paper include: Environment, Sustainability, and local news. In addition to a wide range of articles, they are great undercover agents and publish what few papers would dare to say.
This issue has 65 or more advertisers which show that local businesses support the free press and the enviornment.

This month’s issue is not online yet. However you can read recent issues at the above link.

You could be warned, get past te first 60 seconds and…

There will be a lot of films, in many categories, on all sorts of topics. Come to Santa fe and enjoy the warm theatres, the parties, meeting the actors and sometime directors. You might even have a chance to see an incredible sunset between movies. If you are a film maker, it’s a good place to network too!

People form all over the planet come to this film festival. So do the movies.

OK I spent less than $10 on Black Friday. I had to work and came home right after work. When I got to work late, there was an expired pasta asian style pasta waiting for me for my lunch. I was lucky. There was also apple pie, sweet potato casserole and pumpkin cheesecake. Our boss likes to cook. Sometimes I get spoiled. Could you go a day without spending $10? It’d be a good challenge every so often. Do you think we consume too much? Write me. Mary

These two pictures are small examples of curiousity. I was early for a lunch date and decided to do a short walk: rev that metabolism some. I had my camera and started checking ot the neighborhood, not too bad eh?

Here’s a funny story a co-worker who is an ex-Marine and a tough smart well prepared guy said, ” So I borrowed my Dad’s truck to go deer hunting, and I knew the area very well. I was bow hunting. Well I hiked and hiked and no deer. So I rested by a big tree as it started to snow and decided to smoke some—-and soon fell asleep. When I woke up there were deer tracks all around me! I burst into laughter figuring the story was done and caught in seeing all these deer walking a few inches from him and laughing. But the story continued. He got up and started back for the truck. It was getting dark and cold. He thought I know where I am, just over that hill. He looked at his compass and couldn’t figure out where the truck was. So he decided to rest and took a smoke and fell asleep. He woke up about dawn, emarassed to have slept all night in the snow. He looked ahead just over the hill’s rim and about 1500 feet away was the truck! “Twice Mary, twice in one day!” (2X’s he made a fool of himself, and him an ex-marine.) The laughing was great and I didn’t feel so bad about mixing up the time of the lecture and missing the lecture! I felt glad to be working at the store PT. Great attitude adjustment.

A little curiousity can be great: think of the laughing deer.

Having a glider ride was Pat’s big fall event, and W really enjoyed checking out these planes and telling stories about them, but for MOST kids, and a growing number of adults, HALLOWEEN is the big blast for October. Like the first picture you gotta watch where you are going and be prepared. However Halloween starts earlier than the night event for most. I have a few decorations up, not nearly as crafty as many in Santa Fe. If I had time I might do a photo shoot. However right now here is more from another blog…

I’m finishing up a fun Jack-O-Lantern flag to hang up on the front door. I’m hoping to get it finished this week, though it seems that something is always getting in the way. One thing that I let stop me is the chance to gt crafty with my kids. I love doing crafty art projects, so getting to sit down with my sons and do some is loads of fun.

One great project we have done is a hanging pumpkin. It hangs up in my oldest son’s room where he can admire his handy work. It was so easy to make too. A circle cut out of orange paper, with black jack-o-lantern face pieces glued on. I used a hole punch to put even holes along and he got some sewing practice in sewing it shut. We filled it out with strips of newspaper to give it a fat pumpkin look.

Another thing they enjoyed doing was kleenex ghosts. We took a kleenex nd folded it over a small rubber ball (trust me, they have tons of those). Then tied a bit of string under the ball to hold it in place. The string was also used to hang them on the walls.

If you are looking for more fun Halloween craft ideas there is a ton listed here. You can also head over to Scribbit and check out what others have posted to the Winter Bazaar.

My pumpkins are green still and the frost has hit multiple times very early for us. However all the squah did very well and most were started from seeds from last year! Plus inadvertently, some cross pollinated and I had new breeds of squash as well. Next up is: NM events.

Well the new ALIBI doesn’t come out until tomorrow…and so I flips through some articles and here’s the first batch…mind you this is going out of my neighborhood some. Sonic Reducer
The Thrills Teenager (Capitol Music Group)
Embarking on a road trip with an unknown band in your CD player is a gamble. It's advisable to have a back up plan in these situations, unless the album you're about to feed your player is The Thrills' Teenager. The first note of "The Midnight Choir" is like aural comfort food. The inviting strum of a mandolin accompanied by acoustic guitar and piano immediately welcomes you into the feel of this alt.rock pop album, which is something like finding your favorite childhood teddy bear while cleaning out your parent’s attic. Teenager is familiar with just enough “different” to make it lovable. [AD]

Mac Lethal 11:11 (Rhymesayers)
Mac Lethal is a Midwest country boy who wants to sweep the slate clean with expression through lyricism and a lethal dose of tongue-in-cheek. “You're just dancing on corpses hoping to get famous” he remarks on "Tell Me Goodbye," describing the many ways artists profit unethically off of tragedies and politics. He’s remarkably honest to the point where you wouldn’t dare take him to a family dinner. Most hooks are poppy and melodramatic, but it’s the lyrical content that keeps 11:11 on point. [JH]

Band of Horses Cease To Begin (Sub Pop)
While I'd really like to like Band of Horses' second full-length album, it sounds a little too contrived and clean for comfort. And jeez, in several songs it's as though the lyricist fell in love and started scribbling sappy free-verse at coffee shops. Don't get me wrong, some of these tracks are worthwhile (as, although patchy, their last album was). Mostly though, for a band attached to so much promise and hype, this work is sadly forgettable. Joshua Redman Brings Back East out West
Lyrical saxophonist explores the trio format
By Mel Minter
Mention Brian Blade’s cymbal crash at 1:46 into “Indian Song,” track No. 4 on saxophonist Joshua Redman’s latest CD, Back East, and Redman waxes euphoric over the moment.[ more >> ] Add a Comment

Cat on a Hot Club Roof
By Laura Marrich
In the universe of guitar mastery, Django Reinhardt is the brightest star in his own corner of the cosmos. And, as is usually the case with legends, there’s plenty of fantastic lore swirling around Reinhardt’s brilliant but brief life, which spanned from 1910 to 1953. [ more >> ] Add a Comment
